"The Hope of Glory: A Devotional Guide for Older Adults" is a thought and conversation provoking Bible study which is both leader-friendly and participant-friendly. The independent Scriptural lessons are based on topics and concerns close to elderly persons. Participants appreciate being able to join a group at any time without feeling like they missed out on previous lessons. They are also comfortable not having to complete lesson assignments or take notes, yet being able to participate with their years of personal knowledge and life experiences. "The Hope of Glory" is designed in such a way as to be sensitive to every participant's unique situation and not only allows, but encourages, each person to add their opinion. It is the author's goal that each participant will leave having had a Bible-based devotional time that is both helpful and meaningful. If you have a desire to share the love of God with the elderly without feeling like you should have a teaching degree or P.H.D behind your name, this study is for you! Be prepared for lots of smiles, laughs, and even a few tears as you find yourself falling in love with your group. Not only will they benefit from your efforts, but you will leave with blessings that will warm your spirit.
Author Nancy Brummett holds a Professional Certificate in Gerontology, but it is her genuine, personal love and respect for seniors that makes this book shine. I lost my father to Alzheimer's and now am in the process of losing my mother to dementia, so I wholeheartedly praise and endorse THE HOPE OF GLORY. The devotional guide meets older adults, their families and caregivers where they live...and where they fear, struggle, pray and reach for hope with trembling hands. My favorite lessons--"Blessed Assurance" and "God's Mysterious Ways"--uplifted and encouraged me as I read them to my mother.Whatever our ages and circumstances, we all need the blessed assurances of these devotionals.
I live in a retirement community that includes a continuing care facility. Dementia in its many forms is evident and my initial thoughts on The Hope of Glory center there. “Who Are We, Really?” is especially helpful to people in the early- to mid-stages of dementia. My observation is that self-identity is an early characteristic leading to depression, which, in turn, magnifies the realization of memory loss. Women, in particular, have long identified themselves through familial relationships. Suddenly, a woman is no longer a wife and is no longer needed as a mother, so who is she? This section will help those women to understand that God knows who they are, even if they, themselves, don’t always know. Dementia is only one problem that seniors face. The Hope of Glory contains helpful information for a wide variety of problems and can guide individuals, caregivers, and group leaders into helpful discussions with seniors who too often look at life instead of living it. Specifically, the subsections titled ‘Reflections or Discussion’ are especially helpful. As seniors participate in discussions, they realize they have more to offer than they had thought. This is an encouragement that leads to more brain activity and, therefore, more social activity with others. This reduces depression and loneliness. Ms. Brummett gives us clear information on how to help seniors realize and accept that God knows them, understands their situations, and loves them unconditionally. However, people of all ages need this knowledge, so share The Hope of Glory with everyone you know. I am pleased that we can look forward to additional volumes from Ms. Brummett with the absolute knowledge that she knows whereof she speaks.
My whole-hearted resistance to believing my collection of very silver hairs has anything to do with my age has met a gracious match in this very lovely volume of Jesus' promises and practical thought starters. If you have some silver souls you want to help see their upcoming days as pearls on the necklace, this book's for you...and them. And yes, me!! Rosemary Harris, author and artist.
Each of the daily devotions is a reminder of God's desire for our lives. As we age we fall into a pattern of taking our way of life for granted. Nancy Parker Brummett's book wakes us up and gives us a new burst of energy towards living for God.
I bought this book as a gift for my sister, who teaches weekly Bible studies in two different "senior living" centers. She used these devotionals with her groups of elderly men and women, and they responded very positively. I think she's hoping for more of the same from Nancy Parker Brummett.
Nancy came to lead a seminar at our church. It was fun, joyful, well-prepared and hosted with warm hospitality. She trained the attendees in how to use the book and resources to love elderly family members or to be so bold as to start a Bible Study in a care facility. This book is the product of a genuine call of the Lord which sent Nancy into ministry with the elderly years ago. Through week after week of loving Bible Study, the author has learned the highs and lows, challenges and joys of bringing Christ's love into these ever-growing environments. Ministry to the aging is a growing need. Every one of us will find ourselves caring for elderly family and friends. Our churches need to grow and catch a fresh vision for Christ's love and care for our honored elderly in their last chapters. This book will take your church and ministry far beyond the 'shuttle to church' or weekly interdenominational chapel. Let's catch a fresh vision for Christ's love and mission to reach the eldest generation!
