Many medical students are enthusiastic to learn the skill of physical diagnosis. To their disappointment, however, they find that in the "real world", physical diagnosis is by large ignored, if not abandoned, by many senior clinicians. In nowadays, most patients receive diagnosis from laboratory and radiological tests rather than bedside interviews. It is even more frustrating to learn that talking about physical signs of a patient is something to be scorned, or at least out of dated. We like to discuss the new cutting-edge research findings, but few would seriously treat physical diagnosis with confidence or respect. Many people criticize physical diagnosis as lacking scientific evidence, and it is said to be vague, unreliable and subjective. To refute this false and unfair judgement, Steven Mcgee tries to find solid research evidence to back up physical diagnosis as a science, no less than any modern medical technique. His effort has combined clinical epidemiology with classic method skills. His arguments are clear, lucid, compelling and highly readable. He wants to convince us that physical diagnosis never vanishes in the atmosphere of modern technology, if only we apply scientific attitude and method to study, use and evaluate it. He has successfully made his point. In one world, "Evidence-based physical diagnosis" is a must-read for everyone who wants to be a great doctor, teacher or investigator in clinical medicine. Every minute you spend on the book will pay off.
I agree. This is the best physical diagnosis book. EVER. I have had the fortune to be an academic physician for more than 25 years. I have read nearly all of them: Bates, DeGowin, Henderson, etc., etc. While residents (and attendings) may be brilliant about the intricacies of West Nile Virus, I am often disappointed by the lack of ability to do a good basic exam. Don't be one of them. Get it. Use it. This is the fastest ticket to being a better doctor there is.
Hard to say "I love it" since it's a textbook. But it is comprehensive and easy to understand. A requirement for my advanced physical assessment course for my nursing masters. I do feel like I'm learning from it.
Love this book, so helpful, small size with all the physical diagnostic tips you need. Best for the IM resident or physician.
Great book for advanced physicians/clinicians in the art of bedside diagnosis ,that already know the basic techniques .Only shortcoming is that bibliographic references have been omitted in this new edition(and this unfortunately is becoming a new worrisome trend among medical publishers ) .I hope a new edtion brings them back where they belong
It is very scientific. A must read for medical students and practitioners performing physical examinations. It is a text and requires careful reading.
The book is written in a way that makes it very enjoyable to read, explains at the beggining how to interpret the contents of subsequently develops data and provides intretings physiopathologic explanations
The author made an incredible approach to physical examination by giving it meaning and scientifical relevance. It appears as a diagnostic tool as important as any other technological advance when used properly. Really adds to our medical knowledge!
