Take the ‘next step’ in health assessment! Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Diagnosis in Primary Care, 5th Edition goes beyond basic history and physical examination to help you master the diagnostic reasoning process. You’ll develop this key skill by following assessment guidelines that focus on a specific complaint rather than beginning with a previously established diagnosis or disease entity. Written by advanced practice nursing experts Joyce Dains, Linda Baumann, and Pamela Scheibel, this edition includes new chapters on evidence-based preventive health screening and on heartburn and indigestion, along with a new full-color design. Master the differential diagnosis process outlined in this book, and you’ll be able to accurately diagnose the majority of patients seen in today’s primary care settings.A clear, consistent diagnostic reasoning process takes you to the next step of health assessment ― beyond basic history and physical examination to diagnostic reasoning.Diagnostic Reasoning: Focused History sections use ‘self-questions’ to walk you through the thinking process involved in obtaining a pertinent, relevant, problem-specific history that will assist in differential diagnosis.Diagnostic Reasoning: Focused Physical Examination sections explain how to perform more advanced diagnostic techniques and interpret the findings.Key Questions guide you through assessment and toward an accurate diagnosis by listing questions to ask the patient, followed by explanations of what the patient's responses might signify.Laboratory and Diagnostic Studies sections outline the types of studies that might be appropriate based on the focused history and focused physical examination.Differential Diagnosis sections offer the most common diagnoses for each patient problem and summarize the history and physical examination findings, along with recommended laboratory and diagnostic studies.Differential Diagnosis tables provide a quick-reference summary of possible diagnoses for each patient problem.Evidence-Based Practice boxes ― more than 30 are NEW ― summarize the scientific evidence related to the diagnosis of patient problems.Alphabetical Table of Contents provides a convenient listing of common health problems.

Although the initial chapter on Clinical Reasoning and Differential Diagnosis is limited, it is a concisely written prelude to a wealth of focused symptom assessment strategies. As a practitioner and a faculty member in a nurse practitioner program, I have found this book to be an excellent teaching resource. Each chapter contains several of the most common symptoms related to a specific body system. For example, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are represented by the symptoms of dyspnea, chest pain and cough. The overlapping of these systems is artfully woven together is a manner that consistently prompts the reader to be focused yet complete. Each chapter outlines key questions to ask and also provides analysis of the possible patient responses. Included is a relational inference between each symptom and age specific concerns. At the end of each chapter, the authors have developed "Differential Diagnosis" tables that are particulary useful to the novice nurse practitioner in a clinical setting. Overall the book's pocket size format lends it to easy reading and convenience.

I am studying to become a Family Nurse Practitioner through Georgetown and absolutely love this book! It has by far the best practical clinical applications of any assessment textbook that I have ever used. I haven't even really used our other textbook in favor of this one. Easy to read- no fluff at all.

Nice book. I have the 2nd edition and compared it with the newer edition. The 3rd edition is much the same as the 2nd but with 2 additional chapters--one on "Mood Changes, Behavior Changes..." and then one on clinical CXR (chest x-rays). Helpful book for students.

this book should be the gold standard for caring for patients. i wish i had this book years ago in my career. It is concise and perfect for any clinical level.

This book is great in explaining differentials. I used it exclusively with my assessments class. I only wish there were more differentials. But the differentials that it does have are absolutely perfect.

Breaks content down by system and symptom. Bought this book when I was taking advanced assessment and differential diagnosis for FNP. Read the whole thing cover to cover and still use it occasionally as a reference for clinical.

This is a required book in my FNP program. I like the format and the chapters are easy to read. We are also using another health assessment text that digs into the specifics. I think this text is a nice compliment to pull everything together. I will keep this text rather than selling back.

This was required for a NP class and so far I am pleased with it. The condition was excellent and fast shipping not to heavy that you cant take it with you places without hurting your back or shoulders.
