New York Times bestsellerA stunning full-color collection of inventive, poignant, humorous, and controversial maps of the world from the internationally recognized digital artist behind the stunning “Map of Stereotypes.”Slovakian artist Martin Vargic rose to international fame in 2014 when his “Map of the Internet 1.0” went viral. Using old National Geographic maps as inspiration, he drew a striking and meticulous map of the most visited websites in the world, portraying Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, , and Apple as sovereign countries; the eastern continent as the “old world” with originators like Microsoft and IBM; and at the most southern tip, a forgotten wasteland of outdated and obsolete places of the past like You’ve Got Mail and Friendster. The extraordinary “Map of Stereotypes” is a cartogram based on a westerner’s stereotypical view of the world that assigns more than two thousand labels and pop culture references to cities, states, countries, continents, oceans, and seas on a large-scale world map. Visually stunning and remarkably clever, both artworks generated notice worldwide.Beautiful, unique, and packed with intricate and brilliant details, Vargic’s Miscellany of Curious Maps showcases this visual artist’s rare talent as never before in a gorgeous edition sure to be treasured by fans. Along with eight exquisite and unexpected conceptual atlases, he has imagined The Music Map, The Map of YouTube, The Corporate World Map, and many more. An additional fifty mini-maps of the world display a diverse list of data, such as the number of heavy metal bands per capita, the probability of getting struck by lightning, average penis length, NSA surveillance rate, and number of tractors per 1,000 inhabitants.Extensively mapping various subjects from all corners of our modern civilization, Vargic’s Miscellany of Curious Maps is a fresh and thoughtful look at Western culture that will spark conversation and continually surprise and fascinate readers.

This book is visually beautiful. What an unbelievable way to look at the world. My nephews ages 5 to 14 have loved looking at this book with us. The author is clearly a savant. The included loose pull out map was a surprise. My husband is a world history teacher at a college prep school and an avid book lover. I ordered this for Christmas for one of my nephews. It is now my husbands and we have recorded others for gifts. Brilliant.

A lovely work of cartography, ethnography, and obsessive-compulsive absurdity. It's also beautiful art.

I have twin 15 year old boys currently in AP world geography in high school and they love it. When I saw this book I was thrilled at finding the perfect gift for them. The book duid not disappoint. This book basically makes crazy maps out of known information about the world. For example the opening set of maps shows the world. But instead of having the actual names of each state and country and ocean, it lables those places with what that place is known for. This makes for some fun map reading for sure! Other maps included in here are a map of the known internet world. A map ofHowever, do be aware that there are a couple of more adult themed maps that will not be appropriate for children. All in all this was a fantastic book for people that are into learning about the world and how those pieces relate and compare to one another. Some of the facts are just off the charts facinating. I found myself unable to put down the book, opting to look at just one map before going to bed. And then one more… and then one more. That is my kind of book!

I received this book as a christmas gift (and not by accident.. Wish List FTW!), and it's even better than I anticipated! Wonderfully clever and beautiful to look at. Even other family members who I didn't think would appreciate the humor and wit were enthralled by this work. I may have to gift this same book to some of my friends in the future. But not mine! I'm holding on to my copy of this creative work.

Where do I begin? This is amazing. Something of interest for anyone. My husband and I both pick it up and scan it several times a week, reading various parts. Lots of information. It just gets curiouser and curioser.

Everyone who sees this book loves it! It's so unlike anything out there. A great gift for the person who has everything.

A delightful work. Martin Vargic has created a set of maps that tell tales of humankind. And is delightfully quirky! The "Map of Stereotypes." Canada is termed "Maple Syrup" and the United States "Liberty" and South America "Salsa." .Antarctica is labeled "Penguinland"; the ocean nearby is listed as "Penguin Ocean." There is a whimsy to the maps that is delightful to me.Then, the map of sports. Cycling, bungee jumping, skateboarding, weight lifting, professional wrestling, American football, rugby, etc. Quirky! Other maps--% of adults using contraception devices, divorce rates by country, drinking per country, internet use, lightning fatalities. And a myriad more! This is a delightful and whimsical work. Well worth looking at!

I love this book, and all of these whimsical and thoughtful maps. They are works of art, and it's amazing that the author is as young as he is. (Just 17 this year!) I think anyone that doesn't appreciate this book or who complains about flaws just doesn't understand that these are conceptual maps.
