This DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer of Virginia offers good coverage of the road network across a large state. The 3D-like visual presentation gives an appreciation of terrain, especially in the mountainous western third of Virginia. The impressive gazetteer function covers town names, recreation areas, hiking, campgrounds, bicycle routes, canoe trips, fishing areas, historical sites, public gardens, art museums, science centers, wildlife areas, waterfalls, scenic drives and wineries, among other topics which might interest visitors. Some cautions: the 1:150,000 scale for the map sheets means the printing for place and street names is small and hard to read, and of course there is limited detail for major urban areas such as Northern Virginia. Cautiously recommended.
WARNING -- WARNING -- WARNINGDelorme published a 5th edition in 2003. This edition (4th edition) is an older one. If you want the most currecnt edition you will need to look else where. This edition is copywright 2000 with information that appears to be accurate to 1999. New roads, etc not on this edition.Although it will probably be acceptable for many uses, just make certain that you are willing to buy the older edition.
Good detailed map, but dang the writing is small. You better have good eyesight or a magnifying glass and plenty of light. Delorme should make the maps bigger by adding additional pages. I'd be willing to pay more.
This is the best Atlas/Gazetteer I've found around at least for the areas I travel and can vouch for the details. It's a great resource for those times when you need to get off the main roads and see where the back roads take you. This map has a lot of the small details that I was looking for, trail heads, boat ramps, camp grounds, wineries, ferries, waterfalls, etc. The topo lines are pretty easy to read and elevations are well marked for this style of map. It's also pretty easy to cross reference to your GPS unit. What this map lacks are the details you need for in-town travel, and that includes downtown in the small towns. When the roads get too tight you're gonna need a different map because this one only has one size (1:150k or 1"=2.4miles) I also think they should have included phone/web contact info for their places of interest and a couple of blank pages in the back for notes. (Quick tip: I covered the inside back cover with post-it notes so I can take notes and move them to the page I really need them on.)Quality of the book is decent and should last long enough. The book is a bit big (15.5"h x 11"w) so don't plan on keeping this one in the glove compartment!
As a Civil War buff who likes visiting battlefields, this Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer has proved invaluable. Not only does it clearly show where the battlefields are located, but it also shows most secondary roads as well as highways. Time and again I've been able to find shortcuts that aren't shown on the typical roadmap. But even when I'm not on my way to visit a battlefield, it's fun just to drive on a backroad and maybe discover a little hamlet or some other interesting site. But this is more than just a detailed map of the roads of Virginia. Hiking and bicycling trails are also shown, as are state parks and recreation areas. And the topographical features are clearly shown as well, as are rivers great and small, and even the smallest of lakes and ponds. This is an essential tool if you're going to explore Virginia.
The topographical maps show the rise and fall of the land thus allowing me to get an idea of the difficulty (motorcycle) riding a particular route. I use this in conjunction with Virginia State Road Atlas.
The map is pretty good, but it does not have the level of detail that I have seen in Delorme guides for other states.
Every Gazetteer is a must if you are going to tour the state as it will lead you to places and backroads that are not conventional. If you are retired and going in the motorhome., buy one. It makes all so much better.
