All of the James Bier maps are the best of every island. Don't waste your money on others and don't try to find off the beaten path places with rental car maps. These maps show the locacations and name of every waterfall and the date of every lava flow. A must for those interested in the real Hawaii.
My husband and I were planning on going to the big island and, although we had a GPS, I wanted a map that we would use to mark the places we wanted to go while we were on the plane (something to do to pass the 10 hours in the air! :) this map turned out to be a Godsend! we were on the Big Island for 8 days and wore this map out! we did a lot of touristing and this map was really helpful! Not only did it show towns, roads, etc., it also showed points of interest that came in very handy! It also showed the lava flows and gave the dates of them. If you're going to the Big Island and plan on doing some adventuring, this is a great map to get! We also got one for Oahu, which was very helpful on that island as well.
The James Bier maps of the Hawaii Islands are the best reference for your travels. We've been using these maps for getting around the islands for over 20 years. The detailed geographic information and relief shading to show land details and lava flows are great. The close-up maps of developed areas and special features such as Hawaii Volcano National park cover just about everything you'll need.The only other map we use is the book (Ready Map Book of East (or West) Hawaii) of street maps that helps us find specific streets in the various subdivisions. We only need that on rare occasions. Usually the James Bier map is enough.
I have found this to be a valuable tool in planning my trip to Hawaii, well worth the $5. Purchased both the Map of Hawaii and Oahu. Have highlighted points of interest so that I can put together my day to day plan. Have not used it as a road map yet.
The best map of the Big Island I have found. The only reason we did not give it 5 stars is because there are numerous roads that are blocked (by gates, chains, and/or walls) which are not indicated on the map.
Anyone going to the Island of Hawai'i, the Big Island, should use this map. This island is not like any other in the Hawaiian chain. We were there in September, and this map kept us from getting lost or going out of our way. It shows all kinds of info: small roads, big and little beaches, monuments, resort, viewpoints, mileage keys, etc. it was easy to see the best routing then confirm it on the internet. But this was way easier to use in the car, then our iphone or ipad, as you can see a huge area and all of the detail at once. GREAT MAP!
The map's quality is awesome. Not flimsy or easily torn. BETTER than the free maps at car rental places and AAA. VERY detailed. We chose this because Google maps and our GPS don't show 'the big picture'. Nothing beats an old fashioned paper map and this one is the best. MANY details marked; insets of the volcano area, towns, etc. Also makes a nice wall poster after the trip is complete!
Bought this for our first visit to the Big Island. We circled the island, hiking here and there and visiting beaches and parks, and this was the ONLY map we needed. Everything is shown here, from the major roads to the minor ones, with enough magnification of the cities to find your way around easily. All of the beaches and state parks are shown as well as museums and historical sites and even some touristy stuff like where the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut visitor center is located :)Even better: natural features not shown elsewhere, like the dates of the lava flows you're driving over and the elevations of mountains and towns.Recommendation: Get this and the book "Hawaii, the Big Island Trailblazer" and you'll have all you need to have a heckuva good trip!
