This by far is the best map I have ever found! Since Escalante isn't a National Park other maps don't list all the canyons or trail heads like this map. It's a little big but perfect for the fact it even list canyons that are in BLM lands.
Detailed, full color, topographical and road map of the entire Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and a decent amount of surrounding area. It folds up small, and is waterproof & tear-resistant. I have gone backpacking a couple times deep in the area and this (combined with a good compass) has been my guide. Well worth the price.
Great companion to any trail guide of available hikes in Grand Staircase of the Escalante.This travel map is meant to accompany you on your hike. The paper stock is high quality and water repellant and thus won't be worse for the wear in your knapsack or backpack.I used it as a general planning guide to try and get a terrain view of the hikes my son and I wanted to pursue during a recent trip. The map serves its purpose.
These National Geographic Maps are phenomenal. They feel like a waxy paper but if you try to do a small tear along the edge it stretches instead of tearing like paper so they seem to be made from a plastic paper instead. So that is how they are waterproof and tear proof. I found the detail really good with great hiking information and some geological information on many of these maps.
It was helpful for our first excursion into Escalante. You will likely want additional detail for the area you are hiking in addition to a GPS. It is a necessary tool for hiking in Escalante. Always check the visitor centor and watch the weather.
I love the National Geographic Topo maps. We have several maps for our hiking areas. They are heady duty, waterproof & tear proof. Perfect for hiking. Besides being a map of the terrain, it gives you some hiking routes & information about the area.
Do not... I repeat:Do not attempt to hike back out Coyote Gulch with kids. We read multiple Rticles and watched many YouTube videos that swore hiking I and out of Coyote Gulch was doable.... I would like to shout a BIG he!! NO to the rubbish!!! My 5 year old was begging to be dragged and/or carried out of the sandy/steep/devilishly HOT canyon. The hole in the rock... Count my little dudes out.. They were scared to death and ultimately bribed with many promises of sugar treats and artificial sweeteners. Save the drama/hellerific hike until your kids can hike out a different section of the gulch. Heed my warnings, oh parents of children of the corn. lol.
These are nice quality maps. I like the tear and water resistance. I added this one to my collection of destinations to go exploring on my dual sport motorcycle. Don't leave home without a GPS and a good map!
