This map of "Northern Spain" is in reality NORTHWESTERN SPAIN. It encompasses only the portion of northern Spain ON THE ATLANTIC COAST from San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostella. I needed a map of the portion of Northern Spain south of the Pyrenees, from San Sebastian east to the Mediterranean. If the description had been accurate, or even clearer, I would not have purchased it.For the inaccurate/deceptive title, "Northern Spain," I fault the publisher, National Geographic. For the inadequate description (failing to note the true geographic area covered) I fault . In either case I am unhappy, and the map is of no use to me.
Wonderfully detailed map. My one complaint is that they do not include the beginning of the Camino Frances a few miles into France. I bought the Pyrenees map to get that small portion of the trail only to find that the two maps are in a different scale, plus the Camino is not marked on the second map. If you don't care about the Camino de Santiago my complaints will not affect you in the least. It is hard to understand how NatGeo got this little detail wrong as the rest of the map really is good.
Spent ~3 weeks driving around northern Spain and this was without a doubt the best map we had on the trip. Accurate, easy to read and with lots points of interest listed. We were able to find a bunch of ancient dolmens that were listed on no other maps nor in guide books. Very pleased and will use maps from this series again.
I found this map a bit useless. There were few places listed I visited. I looked so detailed, but there are other maps far better in my experience. I didn't drive, so perhaps it makes a better driving map for those traveling that way.
National Geographic maps are generally outstanding but this one is obsolete. This map is 4-5 years old--it has a copyright date of 2011 but also from 2010, some of the data in now 5 years old, or more. From looking at a Spain on Google Maps, I know that many roads shown as under construction or planned on the National Geographic map have been completed, and it appears that there are some roads finished that are not even shown as planned on the NG map. Unfortunately, the newer Spain maps are at a very different scale and therefore less useful for northern Spain. I'm surprised that NG has not kept up with major road changes and issued a newer map. I'd pass this one up and wait until a newer one comes out.
I wanted a printed map as a back-up in case of problems with GPS and as an aid for planning trips, since it would offer a bigger picture and allow us to use optional routes and back road. This map almost did that. The problem is that there is a rush of road construction going on in Spain and the map is not sufficiently current. (I checked: it was printed in 2011 although this was not stated online at the time of purchase.)This map would probably work best for countries where roads are not being expanded at such a furious rate. Still, it is well designed and detailed map (very large for that reason and so a bit ungainly when driving), and it did come in handy for planning the overall road trip since cities and landmarks don't move from year to year! I would just look for a more recent printing.
I like the sturdy, coated paper, and all seems to be in order for finding my way in the north od Spain.
