"Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" is one dynamic text, which has made indelible contributions to the study of pharmacology. Its choice of using simple everyday language in explaining complex pharmacological processes is most welcomed. The same could be said concerning the sheer depth of its contents. And, this eleventh edition has succeeded in raising the standard higher. It provides comprehensive, up-to-date coverage on all aspects of clinical pharmacology. Detailed analyses of both drugs and nutritional suppliments were made. The most outstanding being: the fundamental concepts surrounding their pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications.Again, the pages of this excellent book has increased by some one hundred pages over the tenth edition. A significant number of these new pages were dedicated to easy-to-understand Pharmacological charts, chemical structures of drugs, their metabolic pathways, and other related physiological illustrations. Also, various chapters (partcularly those dealing with antibiotics, prophylaxis, critical care, and pediatric prescriptions) have been updated.I very much appreciate the improvements made on this eleventh edition, yet, my advice to anybody who has already acquired the tenth edition is to stick with it. I frankly see no point in buying this one if you already own the tenth edition.
I am a physician, and recently used the previous (10th) edition as an overview for a presentation I was preparing on opioid analgesics. We just got our new, 11th edition, and I embarked on a comparison of the chapters. To my astonishment, despite the considerable ongoing research in opioid pharmacology, the chapters were practically identical, with the new edition providing NO substantive new information. I cannot speak to the rest of this venerable reference, but this chapter was just a rehash (and a big disappointment).
I can't say that I'm pleased with the new edition. The information is grossly disorganized, there are no introductory chapters, and important information has been omitted or dumbed down, e.g. the section on fat-soluble vitamins, specifically vitamin A.If you're buying, get the 10th ed. The new edition is definitely a step down for Goodman & Gilman.
For many decades, G&G has been, and still is, THE essential reference for medications of all kinds. In over 2,000 pages of newly typeset text, every area of recent pharmacology is covered.Alas, for so-called atypical medications, which have long ago gone out of patent protection, yet are still quite useful to this day, older editions of G&G are necessary references. For this reason, I try to maintain a personal library which contains every other edition.
The problem with the Kindle version of "Goodman And Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 11th ed." is that you cannot navigate the table of contents. When you scroll down to go to a specific chapter or section, it puts a box around the entire page and does not let you select anything. Since this a large book, scrolling through it page by page is not an option. Customer service states, "I understand you are unable to navigate within your Kindle book's table of content by selecting certain sections. This option is not available for this title because this is an option made available by publishers who provide content to the Kindle store." I contacted them again and hope to get a better solution or someone else to contact concerning this issue. As for now, save your money!
i cant believe there has been no prior review on this text. in any case, this book is "the" gold standard in pharmacology texts for medical students, and perhaps even nurses, physical therapists, and the like. however, this imposing tome is not for the faint of heart. it is definitely packed with essentially everything you need to know about pharmaceutical products used in the healthcare industry. the language can be somewhat imposing as well. but if your looking for an authoritative text on the subject, goodman and gilman's is the book you need. for a milder version, you may want to check bertram katzung's title: basic and clinical pharmacology. otherwise, your in good hands.
Still the best...you get lost in its mechanisms of action, similar structures, and receptor stimulations. If in your career you need to wander near a drug that we use, get this book and you will wonder no longer.... Still the best!
First and perhaps foremost, this textbook is viewed as the leading authority in the field in pharmacology and its use in the field of Pharmacy and Medicine.I would recommend (to anyone who doesn't own one already) this as a reference in medicine/pharmacy. The delivery was much sooner than I expected. The book itself was as rated by the seller. This book was rated "like new" and is in immaculate condition.I've purchased new books from the local bookstores and this one is as good or maybe in better condition than those. I would rate this acquisition (shipping/handling) A++. Great shopping experience.
