As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none. In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it! I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal. ANYONE who wants to master the basics of public speaking should read this cover to cover. The principles and techniques Mr. Gregory describes are effective, powerful, and described in a simple way. BRAVO! I'll recommend this to everyone.
I am the nerd in your evening class at the Community College who really gets into the group discussions about each chapter of the textbook that we all had to write detailed notes and answer questions about. I'm the one who steered the conversation topic from "why you should dress professionally for a presentation", to "why should other peoples' judgments dictate what we wear?" I can get interested in pretty much any subject, find a way to analyze it, etc. and even I could not stand this book after the 4th chapter or so.It was so miserably boring, so repetitive, and so basic. The material covered seems more fitting for a middle school level. It repeats the same, dull, elementary information over and over and it makes up the bulk of every chapter.Students - you probably have no choice but to take the class (it's a requirement at my school) and to get this book for the class. But rent it, don't buy it. I doubt you'd ever need to crack it open again.Professors - please don't use this book. please.
Book was pretty good and gave detailed information of speeches as well as examples of speeches. Can be helpful for oral class presentations.
My title says it all...great textbook to keep and use as a public speaking/speech preparing reference tool. Although comprehensive in scope of material, the text was easy to read and understand.
As a minister of the Gospel, I need to be able to present information in a clear and comprehensive manner. This book was as helpful as a homiletics (the art of preaching) book that I used for preparing messages and presentations. It is complete and extensive, without being overbearing in its content. I would recommend it for anyone that will be engaged in public speaking of any kind.
I got this for a friend who needed it for a college class. She was pleasantly surprised by the good shape the book was in. It looked almost new. And its shipped in plenty of time for the start of her class.
I've gotta be honest. I never even opened this book. I re-sold it to a friend later in the year. My teacher taught me what I need to know. From what we read in class (Not much) it was good. It had good tips advice and strategies for speaking in public.
Got this book for my communications class. It's very helpful when it comes to writing a speech outline and even has some pretty good tips on overcoming the fear of public speaking.
