Reading Lessons Through Literature is a pick-up and go Orton phonogram reading program organized around the stories in The Elson Readers. Like other Orton phonogram programs, it focuses on teaching reading through spelling. First children learn the basic phonograms. Then they begin writing their spelling words, analyzing them, and reading them for practice. And finally, they begin to read stories which include the words they've learned. RLTL teaches 75 basic phonograms. In Level 1, the spelling lists are organized around the stories in The Elson Readers Primer. Level 1 includes instructional material, the spelling lists, and The Elson Readers Primer, so there are no additional readers to purchase. In the Primer, multi-letter phonograms are underlined and multi-syllable words are separated between syllables to help the beginning reader. An optional PDF Phonogram Workbook is available at Lulu.com.

I've been using this with my emergent reader (newly 7) for about 5 months. Previous to this, she was stuck reading only CVC words (cat, bat etc) and a few sight words she learned in public K. We tried another (quite expensive) scripted program for about 6 months and she made no progress at all. I picked this up after learning about the method of spelling to read and gave it a shot. This has been such a blessing for us! My daughter is math minded. She needs to understand the process of reading and decoding words. She needs to know why letters make many sounds and what patterns there are in writing.There are no bells and whistles or cutesy characters. It's simply spelling lists and learning phonograms and readers all in one affordable book. While we learned the first 200 words I didn't ask my daughter to read anything else for that entire month or so. She "hates" reading so she was happy for the break. When we were ready for the first reader, she beamed with joy, " I can read Mommy!" Because she knew every word. And it wasn't some rather dull BOB book about a cat that sat. There was also no distracting pictures that encourage her to guess.Dictations are fun in our house and rather quickly she was spouting back the rules and picking out phonograms before I even said them. She can now attack new words as we've added outside reading back in, "Oh that's a silent E because English words don't end in v," or "The y says the e sound since that word has more than one syllable." One would think it's harder for them to grasp it this way with all this to remember, but it's brilliant and easy. I look forward to continuing in all the levels!
Wonderful! I love that it's scripted. I love that the text is clean and clear. I love that she almost holds your hand - however - having been homeschooling the classical method for many years, I was concerned that the Charlotte Mason approach would be too slow or boring for my kiddos. Just the opposite- they bring me the book and say "time to read !" My kids know I have little patience for "Twaddle" - I'm pretty strict about sticking to the classics. I couldn't write a more perfect grammar/English/reading program!! Be sure to consider the workbook - it's clesn and easy to follow. If you are familiar with Explode The Code, it's very similar to this in its appearance, and we love it !! I think this is finally "the one!"

Reader is an old school text reformatted into syllables, enjoyable stories, only one picture per story, not distracting.
