"Paradise in the Sea of Sorrow" is a moving non-fiction piece about mercury poisoning in Minamata Bay, Japan. The story is written in Japanese originally, so it was slightly hard for me to follow some of the cultural aspects in the dialogue. Either way, this is an amazingly moving story. The people affected by this disease will break your heart. Their stories are ones of courage, desperation, and strength. The story is beautifully written, almost lyrical.I read this book for an Environmental Justice course in college. The shipping was super fast and the book, even though it was used, was in great condition. There were no markings, the back wasn't broken; couldn't ask for better quality. This book stayed on the bookshelf for a future read.
I return to this collection of essays again and again — astonished every time. Not only is this a nearly unique record of an environmental tragedy (other firsthand accounts do exist), but it is an early, skillful example of creative nonfiction (and/or new journalism). The stories are heartbreaking and presented with such clarity and humanity. This is a classic in the literature of environmental justice.
