I just read "Hey, Who's in My House?" and I loved it. It is a great addition to my book collection that I read with students who are experiencing divorce and remarriage in their families. I especially appreciated the candor from the authors and found it to be a refreshing take on the ups and downs of being in a blended family. Erin Mantz's story, "Fractions of Myself, Divided by Me, " especially spoke to me about the transitory and often complicated experience of finding family in many places. As an elementary school counselor, I plan on reading from this book with my support group for students whose parents are divorced.
Coming to terms with the destruction of one’s own family and then being thrust into a whole new family situation can break anyone’s spirit at the beginning and for some can take a lifetime to adjust. No one to blame if love can underlie all the unknowns--but knowledge of the hidden emotions and feelings certainly can help the situation. I think that Erin has done us all a service in bringing it out in a very insightful way. I hope that any child and parent going through this can find strength in reading this book and hopefully learn that adding other people to your life besides your very own family can help you in the long run. Thank you!
No two blended families are alike and neither are a child's blended family experiences. Author Erin Mantz masterfully captures this in her book, Hey, Who's Living In My House. Once I started reading it I didn't put it down until I was finished. Erin gives stepkids a voice by sharing their intimate stories including her own personal story as a stepdaughter. The courageous stories demand your attention with its frankness as kids are in most cases unwilling and generally silent passengers on their parents divorce and remarriage train. Erin's stories span the spectrum of emotions when it comes to blended families. It's a great book for couples considering becoming a blended family. It's also a great book for older kids who will be or who are already part of a blended family.
We read many stories and books about what its like to be a stepmom, a stepdad, stepfamily, but we rarely hear what the stepkids think about being in a stepfamily. These stories share real life experiences from young and old stepkids, positive and thought provoking moments. If you are a stepparent or a stepchild, read this book and talk about what it meant to you. A great book to open the conversation and discussion about being in a stepfamily.Great job Erin.Claudette ChenevertThe Stepmom Coach.
I found Erin Mantz’s book “Hey Who’s In My House” incredibly enlightening. As a stepmother myself, I found that it helped me to step outside of my own shoes and get an inside look at the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of stepchildren in various types of complex families. I’m always striving to be the best stepmom that I can be, and I feel that these insights will help me in that journey.
Honest and insightful, this is a book that needed to be written. To be in our children's shoes and see their fullness of life and deeply felt emotions, although sometimes derailed, through their eyes is a gift.. The authors choice of contributors and the author herself share their journey and strike a deep chord in us as parents. Unforgettable.
I applaud the author for giving kids a place to share their thoughts like this as most articles/books on the topic seems to be through the lens of an adult. It also gives perspective to families that are not going through this but probably know many that are!
