The Accidental Life of Greg Millar by Aimee Alexander, intrigued me from page one. Despite having visitors in the house, having to pay a visit to the doctor and attend a funeral, I still read it in three days. It's a roller coaster of a book.Lucy meets the successful, charming and exciting Greg Millar and falls for him. He has two children from a previous marriage. Toby is sweet and lovable but spunky Rachel doesn't hide that she hates Lucy. It's during a holiday in France that relationships become strained and a serious medical problem emerges.Just as she did in 'Pause to Rewind', Aimee Alexander has done her research and obviously understands and can portray this illness very well. I found myself wondering if the writer may have a medical background. With convincing dialogue, real characters and some beautifully worded descriptions this is a moving and inspirational book.
Wow, what a story! At first I thought this was a stereotypical romance. Sad girl meets rich, successful nice man and falls in love - which she does. But it all kicks off from there. It soon becomes clear that Greg Millar is not quite the man that Lucy thought he was and while she tries to ignore his increasingly odd behaviour, she finally has to accept that something is very wrong and things grow dark, even sinister. What made this story for me was the strong cast of characters. Lucy has a strained relationship with her mother and loves but envies her perfect sister Grace, despite the fact that Grace is the most supportive big sister a girl could have and isn't quite as perfect as her sister thinks. Greg's mother and in-laws are as dreadful as you would expect and his kids are suspicious and resentful of her arrival. Their world is perfect and they have all the maternal love they need from their adoring child-minder. They don't need or want a new mother and Lucy finds herself with a battle on her hands. But the more she thinks that she should bail, the more she realises that she loves this man and is ready to fight for him.I enjoyed this book, I was gripped by it and I think I will be reading a lot more from Aimee Alexander.
I feel like I have watched this novel in vivid technicolor as Aimee Alexander has the brilliant skill of visual story telling. I am captivated from the first page to the last by strong characters, delightful settings and a very powerful story. This Author delivers a twist full page turner that has me looking for a follow on book.
The Accidental Life of Greg Millar is a FIVE STAR read. Aimee Alexander writes captivating, heart wrenching stories with three dimensional characters that pull you into their convoluted lives. Like her last book - Pause To Rewind, Alexander reduced me to tears more than once but kept the story unfolding at such a pace I couldn't put it down. She handles delicate subject matter too, with bravery and insight. I got an education as well as a damn good story. I highly recommend The Accidental Life of Greg Millar.
This story by Ms. Alexander is so touching, so real and so heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The scenes with the children could break your heart because of all the love and despair. Very touching, very real. Recommend highly.
I was enthralled by Greg and Lucy from the first page! The author does not sugarcoat this "unconventional " family from the get go. That is what makes this novel so great! Life is messy, marriage is hard, throw in children and you have an amazing story of trust, love, resiliency, imperfection, and courage.
Whew, so a third of the way into the book, I almost put it down.... I was frustrated at how Lucy was being treated, and assumed it would get worse... But, you know what assuming does... I'm so glad that I stuck it out. This book was humbling, eye opening, and incredible. It made me want to take a double check in the mirror, and realize that this could happen to anyone, but would we handle it as lovingly as Lucy did? This isn't a book that leaves you at the last page, but makes you look at life in a whole new perspective...Ignorance is not bliss, it can hurt people, and we all need a wake-up call like this book every now and again... I'm sure I will be thinking about this book long into the future.
This book captivated me from the first page.Aimee Alexander definitely knows how to hold her audience captive for the length of the novel. She knows her stuff, the medical terminology, and the emotional roller coaster accompanying a situation like this. The wonder of this book is that there is a hard won HEA at the end of it, one of sorts, like in real life where there is light at the end of the tunnel, but work to be done. Loved the characters! This health issue being a very personal one for me, I was able to identify the highs of Greg, and the lows, and understand the situation. In real life, this is not a few hundred pages - it is living breathing people going through the trauma, specially the normal person subject to these mood swings and high / low energy roller coaster. It was wonderfully portrayed.I wished, for the first time, there were more stars to give. Thanks Aimee for a wonderful creation! I got to buy her other books and read them as well - Pause to Rewind, Checkout girl and they are equally captivating.
