Tim writes a step-by-step guide in training your puppy - or older dog for that matter - using a kind, loving, positive approach. It's not only about obedience training, it's about a positive relationship with your canine best friend. It's a must read for anyone who loves their dog!

I have done animal rescue and fostering for a long time and I am very supportive of books and websites and that are focused on helping people to understand their pets and help them reach their fullest potential. This book has a lot of great information about everything from choosing a dog to what a new owner needs to know about training and caring for their new dog. The links to products and additional information are very helpful and a great idea to include on the kindle format. It was a great idea to share the links so that these resources were easy for me to locate and view. I really appreciated that this book focuses on how the human's behavior will influence the dog and make it easier or more difficult for the dog to learn what is expected of them. I also applaud the explanations of topics such as backyard breeders and hereditary problems with purebred dogs that weren't bred properly. I learned a lot of great information from this book and would recommend it to people training their dog or considering adding a dog to their family.

I have read this book and find that its a bit lacking in specifics. I am also a member on the Doggy Dan website and it has much more clear information as to what to do. I think the author is very knowledgeable about dogs and likely has very good skills. However, I feel the book was a bit preachy on doing your own home cooking on dog food, that kibble is basically poison, no matter what you buy, and that when you get a puppy if you don't spend every minute of every day for the first 3 months with your dog, your a slacker. Please do not take this as a slight against the skill or validity of what this author has to say, but if your like me and have a busy working house, be prepared to get lectured in this book.

I have two dogs that I adore so I was happily surprised when I received this book as a free review copy. Puppy Development Guide is a gentle book that outlines how to buy and train a puppy successfully. This book has unique information that I have not encountered elsewhere. I recommend this book to any dog owner who wants to better understand their dog and their behavior.

This is a thought-provoking book because it challenges what seem to be the main approaches dog training: obedience or reward giving. Tim Carter advocates an alternative route that is intended to solidify the position of Pack Leader without either excessive and degrading force or use of treats. The key impression is that if one is really the Pack Leader to a dog, then both punishment and reward become less necessary because the dog accepts its position. The constant strained effort to push Pack Leader position, Carter suggests, undermines that position, because if the dog accepts its position in the pack, it doesn't need to be pushed around constantly, or to be bribed.I find his analysis compelling. It will take some time for me to evaluate how much I agree with Carter's specific practical approach, but the fact that I'm going to make this evaluation means to me that the book was worth reading and is worth strongly recommending.

I cannot wait to start training my pup the 'right' way from day one. I have a better understanding of how to treat my dog and have him become that loving obedient domesticated animal that I want to build a strong relationship with. This book has very useful links with an ABUNDANCE of information. The writer also makes himself available should you have difficulty with anything. Kudos to you for a great book, Tim. I'm looking forward to keep up with your blog and website.

This book is wonderful. If you are looking for a book on how to teach basic commands, forget it. This book details how a dog thinks and why it reacts to certain stimuli in the environment. It teaches dog owners how to interact with their dog in a way that the dog will understand so that it results in an improved relationship with the dog. Excellent layout makes it easy to return to again and again to refresh your memory on specific items.

Tim Carter has a unique patient approach while beautiful in concept is sometimes difficult to enact. I found myself going back to it to reassure myself that I was doing it right only to find that my temperament was the problem not my GSD. I am learning to discipline myself while developing the natural instincts of the puppy. The dog is much smarter than I!
