My husband and I were looking into being foster parents. The book did cover a lot of areas. Preparing yourself and your entire family for foster care emotionally and physically. I like how the author mentioned that emotional health and physical health go hand in hand. It's important for foster parents to be well rested. Also, he did mention that there is not a lot of money in foster care. Therefore, it is really a labor of love. I also enjoyed the hints about preparing our home for our foster child. You can tell that the author has a lot of experience dealing with foster children as well as teens. I think this is a great book for anyone looking into foster care. The only thing I wish was different was that the authors spent some time talking to individuals that don't have children already in their home. My husband and I don't have any children. Therefore, we have a different circumstance for our family. I wish he spent a little time just in that area. I felt like he was speaking from a voice that would be beneficial to families that already have children. However, it is an excellent read, that's why I gave it 4 stars. It contains a lot of helpful information not to mention a lot of suggested tips. This book is not like a foster care for dummies. It's not that detailed but it does contain a lot of really good information that I felt beneficial.
The author of this book has extensive personal knowledge about foster parenting which is essential because so many don't have that touch. She gives very level-headed advice and a clear lay-out of how to make the transitions as smooth as possible. The children who have been lucky enough to have this author as their foster parent are lucky indeed. I had once looked into being a foster parent and she answered many of the questions I had, especially about the "return to the parents" process. It sounds like she has had a wide range of children to deal with from wild to mild, and I tip my hat to her patient and loving heart. Honestly, I think regular families could learn a great deal from this book regarding home structure and rules. I will be using a few of the techniques myself for my own children! thanks!
I liked this book because it clearly was written by someone that has walked the walk and talked the talk. After reading the first few pages it became very obvious that the author was explaining what you can expect and gave some great suggestions about ways to handle various situations from first hand knowledge.I particularly liked the emphasis on mutual respect among all members of the household and the suggestion of household rules that apply to everyone, including the (foster) parents. The author also points out that communication will be a major key in your success and discussing fears among other family members even before the arrival of the new visitor is a great way to alleviate those fears.I highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to get some insight into foster parenting, the pros and the cons.
...is all written and explained in this book. I love how the author writes from her heart and explaines all the challenges and phases you go through when foster a child. A great book with a good insight on foster parenting. Everyone who is interested and considers foster a child should read it. Great value. Loved the part about taking care of oneself. If you are healthy and happy your family and your foster child will follow.
I've always been interested in possibly doing foster care, but everything I researched it I couldn't find answers I was looking for, even tho I even asked a few foster parents. This book actually covered the nitty gritty questions I had! This is a great read and a 'must have' for anyone considering foster care. I loved how practical and information it was.
Whether you are investigating becoming a Foster parent, or whether you are already one, you will find this book useful. Poster parenting can be completely different than what you expect when you actually get into the thick of it, but this book is a good preparation or solution finder to some issues you will encounter.
My wife and I have recently started foster care and it is a tough gig. This book has certainly opened our eyes to becoming better foster parents!!I really recommend this book if you are even considering foster care!!
We both benefited from a quick read of this helpful book the weekend our foster teen moved in with us. Very helpful tips for what to expect. I will be happy to share this book with my friends who are also contemplating fostering kids.
