Racial And Ethnic Groups (12th Edition)
Available To Downloads

Grounded in a socio-historical perspective with engaging stories and first person accounts.   Racial and ethnic relations in the United States are at a dynamic and exciting time. Major events are shaping our society, such as population and immigration changes, the election of the first African-American president, and increasing diversity throughout our society.   Racial and Ethnic Groups, 12th edition helps students understand the changing dynamics of the U.S. population. By using a socio-historical perspective, the author frames issues by examining our history, exploring the current situation, and discussing the concerns for the future.   Filled with first person accounts, such as “Listen to Our Voices,” brief story chapter openers, and “Student Voices” questions, Schaefer’s Racial and Ethnic Groups actively engages students in the study of racial and ethnic relations.     Major changes include the introduction of “Global View” boxes, and new discussions of high-interest topics, such as African immigration and color-blind racism.

This textbook on race relations is decent and many of the students said they found it useful, but no one thought it was a great text. I find it extremely boring, expecially when compared to the far more complete text by Farley, "Majority-Minority Relations." Schaeffer's approach seems to be to cover lots of topics, but none with any depth. The text is adequate but I am disappointed with its lack of depth. I do think it is a very useful book, nonetheless, for the beginning student and for the professor who perhaps is looking for a text that will be non-threatening to the student.

For some reason, the author feels that the truth isn't strong enough to stand on its own and resorts to bending the truth and taking events out of context to make a statement. In the very first chapter, the author suggests that high school students who erected a racist symbol on school grounds should be charged with a "hate crime" instead of being suspended from school. The author then suggests withing the same paragraph that three other students who ganged up on and brutally beat another student at the same school were wrongfully charged with "attempted murder". Apparently, comparing apples to oranges and leaving out key facts will somehow compel an audience into believing that an injustice has occurred. (Displaying racial symbols, while offensive and hurtful, is not the definition of a "hate crime". Also, when any 17 year old uses deadly force in an assault against another, the DA is obligated to bring charges against the aggressor(s)... common sense!)The author also suggests that legislation against illegal immigrants while at the same time harboring refugees from the atrocities occurring in Darfur constitutes some sort of hypocrisy. Again, he is comparing apples to oranges and leaving out key facts. It's a true shame that an opportunity for social education and personal growth should be so clouded by deceptive tactics. This is a truly painful read.

The book itself is fine. The condition is good. The issue I have is that I specifically chose a book that said "Racial and Ethnic Groups Plus NEW MySocLab with eText -- Access Card Package" because I needed the eText and access card. I realize the book is used, but that's why I chose one that said with access card. The book came without the access card, so I still had to pay over $80 to purchase access online. VERY FRUSTRATING!!! Please, do not label something has having the access card if it does not, in fact, have the access card. A disclaimer somewhere obscure that used items "may not" have access card is not helpful when the description specifically says it has it.

Just like any text book for a classist had what I needed for the class. I found it to be simplistic and written well below college level. It met my expectations of text books in being both over priced and if the tests had not been designed to fit it less than helpful. I got a good grade on the class with very little effort and only reading small amounts of the text.

This book does tend to plod along just a little but but as a whole it's a great tool for learning more about racial and ethnic groups. For an ethics course in race relationships I highly recommend this text. As with any text there are parts that are redundant and pandering but as a whole this gets the job done.

An extremely useful book in today's debate about race and ethnicity. While in class I've noticed this mentions almost every racial conflict that could occur, and it has also given me a better idea of other people's cultures. It came in great condition and on time, price isn't too bad also.

Purchased for a class at Troy University during my undergraduate studies and then sold (as most textbooks are) once finished with it. During my graduate studies I realized that much of this information was still pertinent and useful as sources so i purchased it all over again and now have almost all of the books that I used during my collegiate studies. This is a very informative book and an easy read.

Expected more up-to-date stats! Too many statistics remain the same a year later. For example, the same scenario of immigrants are discussed as being 48 or 54 years old in Chapter 4 one year in the 2011 edition and the same age a year later. There are also typos in Chapter 4 in the section entiitled Population Growth, which shows insertion of a clause or two while statistics remain the same or are generalized. My university uses the 2011 twelth edition of this book, I purchased the 2012 thirteenth edition thinking there would be more up-to-stats. My fault I am sure. Perhaps, I should have purchased the fourteenth edition.
