I have been using the pretest books to study for all of my shelf exams this past year. I just got the new edition of pretest surgery. I have to say the questions are good, but I found quite a few errors. I mean seriously? This is a brand new edition and I have found multiple errors or lack of images that were supposed to be there to answer questions: 388, 397, and 444. There where other questions that had problems as well. I expected a little better editing skills for a book from McGraw-Hill.
This book has a number or questions that have some element involving "the imaging study shown here." Well, this would be fine, except the image isn't in the book, so... yeah. Also, the correct answers for a number of questions don't actually match up. For example, the answer quide will say answer B is correct, but if you read the description, it actually describes one of the other answer choices as the correct one.Someone clearly did not do an adequate job proofreading this edition.
These questions are not like NBME-style questions. They do not enrich your understanding of the subjects, but rather hone in on nitpicky details. Sadly there are few good resources for the surgery shelf, but this one is almost counter-productive because you could waste a ton of time with it. There are some decent questions in here, but lots are ruined simply by archaic phrasing and reliance on useless factoids. And on top of it all, there are lots of errors too. It's worthwhile to invest in a UWorld subscription and do those surgery questions instead. When, oh when, will medical students get a comprehensive and worthwhile resource for the surgery clerkship?
I do not know why this book has such a low rating at this time. The surgery shelf is a random test that asks about seemingly minor details and often feels unrelated to surgery. This book, however, provided great questions that definitely helped me do well on my shelf exam. A lot of people seem to have problems with the editing, but I personally did not notice many errors and the few that I noticed were fairly easy to get around. If ten questions had problems (and I noticed fewer than ten questions that had errors) then there are still over 500 surgery questions with fairly extensive answers. If you are on surgery, I recommend this book. Questions are one of the best ways to study/learn and this book is a great resource for some difficult questions. Between this and the Kaplan Pestana guide, there are 680 surgery questions that range from major topics to some obscure details. This should not be your sole study resource for the shelf - I suggest using this in conjunction with another textbook and/or review text.
I tried Pestana review but couldn't learn well from it's format and the USMLEWorld question bank but there were too few questions. I wish I used PreTest for more than just the surgery rotation. Great set of questions and explanations on both right and wrong answers, plus additional great information on general physiology. And it wasn't overwhelming, just the right amount of info.
Good review for shelf but an unacceptable amount of mistakes for a review book In it's 13th edition. I'm not even sure what the new revisions are editing considering the book would lead you to believe billroth procedures with vagotomies haven't been largely replaced by PPIs and antibiotics for h pylori. Common mistakes include referring to diagrams/pictures left out of the book (also left out of print edition) and miskeyed answer choices with correct answers buried in answer explanations.Would recommend students look into smartphone/tablet app which basically turns the book into a qbank like uWorld or Kaplan with randomization options, timer, and stats. With that said, the pretest surgery app even has miskeys within the 25 example questions..if pretest would let you submit feed back for every question as necessary in their app like uWorld they'd have their mistakes pointed out and fixed within a week.
Cons: Pre-Test is known for typos and questions that are too specific or hard for the clerkship exams.Pros: Great book for people that like to actively study since it is pure Q&A. The chapters are separated into specialties, so you can go thru a chapter before starting a sub-specialty to get familiarized. The answers are well-written and more concise than Uworld. Overall, I learned a lot from using it. You can easily finish the book in a long surgery rotation and still have time to use other study resources (i.e. uWorld)
These questions didn't reflect the type of questions on the surgery shelf. Pretest questions focused a lot on specific surgical techniques and things in the operating room, whereas the shelf is all on management of the surgical patient outside of the operating room. My time was better spent elsewhere for the shelf (Uworld, NMS). I did however find it useful for other tests (not NBME shelf material) that my school had us take as a part of our surgery clerkship which were more technique and specialty heavy.
