"Philosophy of Religion: An Anthology," edited by Louis Pojman and Michael Rea, is about as complete and adequate an anthology in the philosophy of religion as is out there. It covers most of the major areas of philosophy of religion: the arguments for the existence of God, the attributes of God (including possible inconsistencies within or between attributes), religious experience, the problem of evil, miracles, pragmatic justifications for religious belief, and religious pluralism, among others. (The section on the relationship between science and religion seems especially strong.) Moreover, the selections represent a balanced blend between classical writings and contemporary studies of the various issues. Nor does there appear to be any evident bias in the selection of writings on the issues. Rather, the editors have taken pains to make sure that both sides (and in some cases, multiple sides) are fairly represented.I recently adopted this anthology for the course I teach in philosophy of religion at our local community college. I have been very well satisfied to date. Most of the selections are ones that introductory students can understand with a little effort.
Many of the books I've read on the subject of the philosophy of religion have been very one sided. It was refreshing to read a book that has various viewpoints covered from the exact words of the philosophers themselves. Many of the difficult subjects that theists and atheists grapple with are covered thoroughly from great minds from both sides. This is an excellent book that will forever have a home on a book shelf.
I was required to get this book for my class, and it did a good job of covering a variety of viewpoints across many time periods and continents. Good choice if you are interested, and as always, the price is better than anywhere else.
This book is amazing. If anyone is trying to gain a better understanding of the different philosophies and arguments behind God and religion this is the book! Well written with great introductions into each chapter.
Bought it for a college class. Cheaper than the bookstore! As for the content: the class was one of my favorites and if this teacher chose this book, it must have been for a good reason.
