I found that this dictionary is incomplete and would really only be very helpful to someone with very rudimentary Kiswahili. I would recommend this book only to the casual traveler and not anyone intending to stay in East Africa for extended periods or anyone undertaking serious study of the language.
I bought this book to prepare me for two years in Africa. I can tell it will be a great easy resource for everyday conversations and daily life. I highly recommend getting this book if you intend on traveling to a swahili speaking country.
I am planning to visit Eastern Africa this year and had ordered the Rosetta Stone Swahili language lessons. However, after months of trying to figure out what was being said, I finally ordered this book. It was a great addition to my learning tool box. The book is small, light and easy to carry. It is well organized for both English to Swahili and Swahili to English translations. The book is also organized into sections for introductions, travel, money, government, etc. It's just what I needed.
You take a gamble with phrasebooks. This one was well worth it. Purchased one for my girlfriend and myself. I already knew some Swahili and this book was a good refresher. It also added a lot to my ever-growing vernacular. Swahili is an easy, fun, vehicular language and this book should help you get started. Definitely recommend it as a part of your beginner's list of books you'll purchase on your road to mastering Swahili.
The book has a lot of useful vocabulary for day to day use. However, some of the vocab in this book is completely wrong.I lived in Kenya as a Peace Corps Volunteer. In the first few months of learning Swahili, this book was very helpful. I'd recommend it to any tourists visiting or backpacking, etc. Though it's not a great tool to actually learn the language properly or for a prolonged stay.

Most of the time when I look up a written word in conversation on Facebook the word is simply not there. It has made communicating in Kiswahili nearly impossible. Very frustrating. Too small of a bilingual dictionary.
I used this dictionary while in Tanzania in 2010. The security guards at my hotel were looking through it and really liked how it gave a Swahili to English and English to Swahili. Upon my departure, I gave the dictionary to the security guards. They were so excited to have it. It's a nice little book that gives phrases and singles words. I plan on going to Tanzania again this summer and purchased it a second time.
