I bought this for myself and when it arrived, no sooner had I turned around than my 15 year old daughter had read the whole thing cover to cover. That says something about how it is well written. I have also read it now and have already taken some of the suggestions. It makes me feel good about myself to know I have responded as courteously as possible to other human beings.
To me this book makes a LOT of sense, especially for the times we live in. Language is so important and it seems to me lacking in our educational system, both at school, but more importantly in the home.As society becomes more diverse and electronically focused, it is even more important for the times when people DO go out into the real world.Yes, much of it is a bit over the top for our lapsed society, but much can be learned if you are so inclined. If you're like me, and these things matter to you too, I recommend a copy of this book.
I bought this book on a whim, and after telling my sister what was in it, she wanted one too! This isn't an "etiquette" book--it's a "how speak appropriately to strangers and acquaintances when you're in an awkward situation" book. I highly recommend it!
Well written, clear and funny. Overall it was a good, short read, and pleasant book. I find I learned a lot of new pieces of etiquette as well. I would recommend this for mother's or teenage girls who want to learn a little more about etiquette and manners.
I can't believe this book was published. I was hoping for some real advice here - some thoughts on how to navigate sticky social situations - don't make the same mistake I did. Here's an example - if a friend tells you they're starting a diet you should tell them you admire their willpower rather than telling them that you agree they need to go on a diet. Another gem - don't smoke in someones house without asking? Seriously? I can't imagine idiotic advice like this being helpful to anyone who has enough interest in manners to buy a book of this kind. I was already pretty clear that it was poor form to tell someone they're fat or pollute the air quality of their home.
Includes some excellent advice that will prove useful even to those who possess excellent manners.A worthwhile investment and definitely worth passing on to young women.
I was expecting a bit more out of this book. This book provides 'obvious' advice. The entire book can be summed up into one sentence: if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.Don't get me wrong, it's a cute little book with a lot of cute quotes. That being said it does not give any real advice about 'being a lady'. Its more like "How to shut up and not say anything mean"
Helpful tips but not enough material. Some of the suggestions seemed to be cliches ... Could have covered more material
