Working as a Trainer/Coach for a big, multinational corporation, I purchased "The Leader Phrase Book" in the hope that I could use it to support my colleagues who are aspiring leaders. Unfortunately I have been disappointed by most of what I read.A powerful person, a leader, is never rude, because rudeness shows weakness. A leader is supposed to be a role model and a role model needs to have excellent communication skills and show exemplary behavior.Someone who felt compelled to say "You better shut your mouth before you put your foot in it" (p.26), "Did someone forget their ADD meds" (p.52), "No wonder you don't have any friends" (p.83), "Kiss my ass" (p.85) etc. is acting in a childish, bullying manner and is not the type of person that I could respect or would look up to. Furthermore, "Don't get your knickers in a twist" (p.143) is downright sexist. If anyone I know used half the phrases in this book, I would consider them aggressive, insecure and ridiculous.The title of the book is misleading, most of these phrases having nothing to do with leadership. I think that "The Smart-Ass Phrase Book" would be a more accurate title.
This book.was a complete disappointment. Basically, it was a list of language to use in certain situations. The author included sarcasm (not a great strategy for 21st century leaders) and idioms (again, not great) He also included Machiavellian techniques and offered ways to make someone look like a fool. this is not the type of leader I want to be!!
I'm not one to buy self help books, but this was worth the buy!!! For those of you who don't know what to say, this book is for you!! A friend of mine recommended this to me and I was quite skeptical. This book is not only informational, but HILARIOUS!!! lol
I love the different ways to say the same thing. I am told i come off strong so these help me find a softer way to say things. I d wish there was a best practice included. Besides memorization i don't know how else to replace my lingo with this one.
I saw this book in a Fedex office in Maryland. I began to leaf through it and found it to have a good phrase for a number of situations. Sometimes when you're stuck for an appropriate response to some sensitive situations you wish you had a pat phrase at the ready. This book helps you with that.
Basically logical info with a sense of scholarly correctness, but...The constant use of the word "you" in answers to other people really aims and personalizes it at them. This is too much, for many many business situations, and will cause ballistic blowups and a splitting of departments and allegiances especially when using the lower of his listed responses that are meant as attacks. I would use this to train people what not to do, more than, as what to do.Many people work in situations where they could loose their job or career if they say the wrong thing. Suggesting smart mouthing as placed in the lower parts of the book's "what to say" lists is like lighting a fuse to a bomb. User beware...
Great book for anyone who deals with people on all levels and needs a quick comeback or maybe no comeback as the case may be. It is a must have for those who want to up their game with short but powerful phrases.
I'm guessing that the misspelling on the front cover should be a good indicator of the quality of this book. The cover says "Your doing great, keep going"... "Your" should be used to indicate possession, "You're" should have been used here.
