Bo Bennett introduces Logically Fallacious as a reader friendly catalog of logical fallacies, aimed at those without formal training in logic but with an interest in learning how to think critically about important issues. With regard to the former, the book is largely successful. Bennett has collected hundreds of fallacies, and presents them with a light, conversational tone (though I found that most of his attempts at humor fall flat), even when describing more difficult technical concepts in deductive logic. His second goal is a bit more problematic, though.It's an open question as to whether Bennett's dual aims of creating a comprehensive list of fallacies and popularizing critical thinking skills sit well together. Logically Fallacious is primarily a list of hundreds of fallacies, and while each comes with a brief description and examples, it's not the type of book most readers will want to sit down and consume from cover to cover. There's nothing wrong with being comprehensive in and of itself, but the book contains some redundant information, mostly in the form of fallacies that are just specific instances of more general fallacies, which have been given their own names. For example, Bennett includes a fallacy called the "Appeal To the Moon", which he admits is just a specific form of the weak analogy fallacy. Such inclusions feel like they serve Bennett's claim of being comprehensive more than they serve readers interested in learning how to evaluate arguments critically.A bigger problem is that Bennett's scholarship appears to have been largely the product of personal experience and Google.
