I see that some evil person has given this book a one-star and "disappointing" rating. That is insane! An intelligent, literate person cannot have read this book and honestly given it such a review of "disappointing" with a single star! This can only have been someone with a personal vendetta or malicious grudge against the author or publisher, or just generally rotten. It is a fabulous work, masterful research, excellently presented ... it deserves nothing but accolades and not only the many awards it has already achieved, but more. If I could give it TEN STARS instead of only 5. I would! I have much experience (40+ years) working with the same archives that this author has mined-and-refined so expertly for his book's topic, so believe me when I say IMO, no one has, to-date, done it better.
A World Not to Come is one of the most well-researched and beautifully-written books to emerge in the fields of Latin@ Studies, American Studies, and literary history. Coronado adeptly guides readers on an exploration of early Latin@ political thought during the late 1700s and early 1800s. His study upends long-held and erroneous views that Latin Americans arrived "late" to modernity in comparison with their Anglo and French counterparts. This book is required reading for anyone serious about understanding the role of print culture in the rise of the nation-state, modernity, and racialization of Latin@s in the US. Highly recommend!
No wonder it's received nine prizes - a beautifully written and rewarding piece of work!
Very disappointing book.
