"Economics and Financial Management for Nurses and Nurse Leaders" second edition by Susan J. Penner, Springer Publishing Company, 2013The stated purpose of this book is as follows: to meet the learning needs of a broad range of nurses, from staff to nurse managers, from entry-level undergraduate students to master's level clinical practitioners. These nurses will learn the fundamentals of economics, financing, and budgeting that affect their work settings and their delivery of health care. These nurses also will develop practical, hands-on skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and making a business case for improving patient care as they apply concepts from this textbook."Ms. Penner does an excellent job of presenting the information and using case examples to increases the readers understand of the various concepts. While I expected this book to be informative I was surprised by how interesting it is.I would highly recommend this book to any nurse entrepreneur. It is critical for nurse entrepreneurs to understand the financial impact of service changes. If a nurse wants to propose new services to an institution the nurse needs to be able to speak in financial terms to the primary decision makers. An important comment made by Ms. Penner is as follows: "It is important for all nurses to understand their impact on health care costs. Learning about budgeting, and budget planning is a first step toward increasing the nurse's accountability for the budget." I agree that it is valuable for all nurses to understand the economics of health care so as to have an effective impact on finances and care. A recent graduate may not be interested in the financial aspects of health care while still finding their way within the system.
