It is a very good book for understanding research. However, if you want to learn how to do your own research (which we had to in our nursing program) where this book is a textbook, I'd urge you to pick up a second book that goes more into running tests, understanding the actual statistical tools, etc. While this book covered that stuff, it was very concise so don't use this book alone to run a nursing research project.
*UPDATE* Dropped the score to 1 star after finding several typos in the math on pages 253-254.This book is dull. Additionally the over use of acronyms is annoying. For a book this boring it would be nice if the chit-chat was cut out and only the actual information was left, the book would be about half the size it is if this was done.
I purchased my book used and it was in great condition; the seller sent it just in time for my research class. The textbook itself is mediocre and does not provide enough examples to clearly define the research terminology. I did well in the course not because of this book, but because I have another research based degree. The core concepts can be difficult to understand because the authors do not do a good job of explaining them. I had hoped to keep this book, and use it as a reference, but I have decided to sale it.
Dry. Does not explain principles well. I had to use a lot of other resources to get the information I needed. The assumption of the author seems to be that the student is already familiar with a lot of the material. I was not!
The book is rather dull and the majority of the information specific to nursing research can be obtained from other (free) sources. Nursing research requires independent actions on the part of the learner as is, so buying this book may not be the best option to learn.
The book itself is helpful and covers all the major topics/vocabulary/concepts you need to know. Wording is often cumbersome and obtusely scholastic. As an aside, the physical book pages of the paperback version are so shiny that you have to keep re-angling the book out of the light while you take notes.
The book was required by my BSN program at the university of Texas Arlington. The book is straight forward and gives you all the information needed to pass the class.
Book was difficult to read because the author would go off these tangents. Poorly organized for a research textbook!
