I found this as a curious and incorrigible child, and I have to say... reading it as an adult, it's more bizarre than I even remembered. Entertaining as pornography and a truly insightful account of the culture and times. I'm not sure if parody or satire are proper terms.
This is a book that makes 50 Shades look like a child's bedtime story! The Victorian era was bawdier than they would have you believe.
I bought this book about 20 times as a teenager. Every time, my mother, or my grandmother would find it and toss it. The newsstand finally quit carrying it. I can't wait to get another copy. Mama and Granny are dead now, so this one is for keeps.
When I first read this work some 45 years ago, I noted how different it was from De Sade, or Pauline Reage, which were also then popular.It's good natured porn. I wondered then whether it was an actual product of the late 1800's, or someone's offering from a later date.
