I am sad to say that this will be the last Jeff Resnick Mystery I buy. I have read the entire series and followed Jeff through his many ups and downs. Honestly, it's hard for me to believe that this book was written by the same author as the other books, as it does not sound like her voice. No matter what Jeff has gone through, L.L. Bartlett was able to infuse this character with a certain spirit and chutzpah that kept the reader rooting for him. That is definitely not the case here. The set up is that Jeff is injured in a biking accident. What follows is 316 pages of him whining and feeling sorry for himself. There is no glimpse of the plucky side of Jeff...only self pity and complaining.I have had my reservations about the character of Jeff's brother, Richard, throughout this series, but it seemed like he was being given some redeeming qualities in the last few books. That apparently has flown out the window. While Jeff is whining about his circumstances, Richard is busy moping around about being bored and apparently 'washed up' at age 50. He wants to find some sort of purpose in his life, but has the audacity to be a lazy and disinterested husband and father to his long suffering wife, Brenda, and their baby girl, Betsy. (Why Brenda doesn't kick Richard's rear end up between his shoulder blades is the real mystery of this book) The disingenuous lip service Ms. Bartlett throws out towards the end of the book about Richard's 'fierce love' of his family falls flat in the face of his sitting on his rump brooding in his study while Brenda single handedly takes care of the house, the cooking, their child, and an injured Jeff throughout the story.Of course, it doesn't take a psychic to see what is at the root of Jeff and Richard's problems: alcohol.
