Having read "Lone Star America" I was looking forward to Mark Davis' new book. Well it hits the mark again (no pun intended). Like the Mel Brooks movie "Blazing Saddles" in which everyone is insulted, Mark leaves no liberal pipe dream untouched. On everything from education, to the environment, to the courts, and to religion, and more, Mark tackles the liberal mantra and pretty much tears it to shreds. Oh, I disagreed with Mark on some especially in the education chapter (I am a college professor), but it was in degree. Even in the title where he refers to the left calling good bad and bad good, brings to mind the passage from Corinthians where the Apostle Paul says let them be cursed who call right wrong and wrong right. The Left has turned America upside down, hence the title, and it has troubled our country to no end. Mark also uses a weapon the Left hates, common sense. The book is a good read. You may like parts and you may dislike parts, but it will make you think.
You will not be able to put this book down. It's that good. It's not just that Mark Davis is one of America's great writers of opinion (you can read his commentary regularly at townhall.com), but the way his book is structured makes it an absolute joy to read. The 27 chapters are named for major issues, such as Health Care, The Economy, Immigration, Guns, The Obama Era, and Climate. Within those chapters, Mark states a number of liberal positions, then proceeds to dismantle them with facts. Buy two copies -- one for you and one for a liberal friend. It may not nudge them to the right of center, but Mark makes the case for conservatism as well as anyone ever has.
I enjoyed reading Mark's last book, Lone Star America, and Upside Down did not disappoint. Great read and Mark Davis is a great communicator and explains how liberals have flipped and skewed topics like gun control and Christianity to fit their agenda. I highly recommend Upside Down!
With the emotionless precision of a surgeon, Mark skillfully lays out the liberal agenda on no less than 27 topics and without missing a beat, calmly and intelligently explains why the conservative alternative is best for our country and our grandchildren. To my mind's eye, Upside Down explains without doubt why any person who is sitting on the fence relative to the upcoming elections regardless of their party, has no choice but to vote against any and all liberal candidates IF they have any hope of returning this great nation to its position of moral strength and that shining light on the hill!!
"Upside Down" is an outstanding book. It provides a principled and thoughtful conservative view of almost all of the public policy and social challenges facing the country. For each of its 27 chapters, Mark Davis highlights several conventional liberal or media views about a topic and then soundly refutes them in a page or two. In other words, you can get an easy-to-read conservative overview of almost every issue in 268 pages. If you are new to the political and public policy debates, this is a great place to start. If you have noticed yourself being pulled to the left recently, this book will help set you back on the right course.
I am reviewing Mr Davis' book, not making a political argument for or against. You'll want a summary of the views he lays out so you know if you want the details and arguments contained in the chapters. This is what I distilled from multiple chapters:1) Liberals reject personal choice, morality, ethics, and freedom of travel.2) Liberals are a collection of small groups, each with a specific objective to change society. Their influence comes from banning together.3) Mark believes they are hypocritical: Kill the innocent, protect the guilty Detest slavery but support authoritarianism Accuse others of racism while they practice discrimination Believe gov't should finance the basic necessities, but jobs outside of gov't are unnecessary Condemn religion while their own view of the future is a faith based belief Environment and anti-rich are slogans rejected by their elite leaders in practice Good intentions offset the destruction of historical institutions (marriage, rules of conduct, religion) Moderation and reasonableness are rejected in favor of liberal authoritarianism, or else anarchy Everyone else’s opinion is intolerable, while theirs is sacrosanctThe book is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable while confirming what others have concluded. In a court of law, Mark Davis' presentation would be considered a clear statement of his side of the issues. After reading the book, you'll agree with some points and disagree on others. But you will be thinking about the topics.
Mark Davis' new book Upside Down combines Mark's clever wit, political savvy and thoughtful insights into an entertaining guide about how to answer loopy liberal statements that all too often pass for serious if sloganesque commentary. Want to know how to respond when a liberal says "Our only options in Iran are appeasement and war"? See page 112. Or if someone asserts "The Middle Class is disappearing"? See pg 141. From Drugs, to the Climate, to Immigration and dozens more topics, Mark Davis offers factual answers to the misguided viewpoints of the American Left that are frequently bereft of facts but long on emotion. Serious conservative politicians should buy a copy, memorize, and march forth to be great speechmakers and debaters. It is an entertaining and fast read, and a have-it-at-your fingertips book that any lover of American liberty should own. Oh, and see page 227.
