I'm a college ESL instructor, and am a bit frustrated. This book has some good exercises, and is very good, but it DOES have errors, and no web site or phone number is given for support. In these Internet-intensive days, a support web site should be a given! I've got to correct students' homework now, seeing if they found the 8 grammatical errors in the given paragraph; I can only find 7! I wish there were someone to contact.
Focus on grammar is a really enriching book that uses different interesting approaches to teach grammar. Most importantly it has what many EFL teachers are looking for which is Larsen-Freeman's three dimensional grammar model (form, meaning and use) helping teachers plan lessons in a more communicative way. Another major feature from this book is that it encompasses 4 skills so we won't have to struggle trying to find those listening exercises that are never present when we need them.
This book is one of the best resources to teach high intermediate students. As a teacher, I like the second Edition much more than the third Edition and there is no difference with the 4th Edition so I will keep using this edition until it is whether all sold ou or out of printt. A great resource even if you are teaching a speaking class for those who need to get a little bit better when using structures.
buyers beware, make sure the book has code to online access that required to do homework online ( not CD as advertised), code can only be used once.
ESL teacher of adults for 16 years here. I HATE this book and this entire series in fact. It is SO confusing and, frankly, mean. It inserts random, rarely-seen examples and then seems to delight in correcting students when they inevitably make a mistake. I have never taught a book that ties my students up in knots more than this one. If you love English grammar for its own sake, by all means, buy this book. If you are LEARNING the English language and plan to use it, the AZAR series is the Gold standard.
Although it was a prime product, there were a lot of writing throughout the book. I have ordered other books that promised similar quality, but this is the only one that arrived in such a poor condition.
This book let you catch the most important thing easily. What's more, you would be suprised at it's detail which makes you understand the tricky things... Whenever you are stuck, it will give best help.
For a workbook this was helpful, but I wanted to order the book instead of the workbook, and that was my fault. It is much helpful to anyone who has the book and my copy was received in great condition. Always good to use .
