I honestly wish those around would stop being stupid, but since I can’t control what they do, I decided to help myself by picking up their newest release, “Critical Thinking: 11 Principles for Problem Solving and Good Decision Making.”In the age of information overload, through media and primarily the Internet, it can be tough to determine what to believe and what to disregard. From politics to animal abuse to which celebrity is being stupid this week, what is real and what is popular hearsay? This quick and easy-thread guide to critical thinking helps you understand how (& why) you should allow the masses form your own thoughts and opinions. My favorite principle has to be “Principle 4: Common Sense.” Common sense is one of those wonderful things I used to witness from people before the Internet age when a man or woman could decide what they needed to do and how to behave without needing validation from a bunch of virtual “friends” or “followers.” Oh, the good ol’ days…“Principle 5: Respect Nature” was also an interesting read as was “Principle 6: Follow the Money.” While respecting nature might seem like something one might instinctively do, that’s not always the case. As for following the money, this chapter was a little different from what you might expect, especially when discussing it hand-in-hand with critical thinking. For example, when presented with data (notably, Internet “facts”), it is prudent to consider where the funding is coming from to support or present these data.
