Because not everyone lives in a geographic region that experiences tornadoes and hurricanes, picture books are a great way for children to learn about these events. A well illustrated picture book can help students understand how tornadoes and hurricanes are formed, and can help them overcome their fear of these extreme weather situations. When students who have been impacted firsthand by a major storm are able to see the explanation in a neutral, scientific way, it may provide a way for them to heal from their traumatic experiences.

I have always been interested in Earth Science and weather and finding a book that shows weather in a realistic way is great. This book does a pretty good job of explaining the weather occurrences of hurricanes and tornadoes. The book includes many facts about hurricanes and tornadoes as well as pictures of the occurrences. Most of the material covered in the book seems appropriate for an older child to understand. I would probably skip over some of the book for my daughter who will be three next month, as some of the content was more mature. The pictures throughout the book that show accurate imagery of hurricanes, tornadoes and some of the aftermath of both. I was a little taken back by some of the images in the book that seemed like they were either photo-shopped or completely unreal. For those pictures in the book, explanation of their actuality might need to be done. Overall, I think the book does a great job of explaining how the weather occurrences of tornadoes and hurricanes, form and how one can stay safe but some of the pictures make the occurrences more unbelievable, than believable. *I received this product free or at a discounted price, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
This book is has some very colorful images that children from the ages 5-10 will enjoy if they understand weather. Both my children enjoyed this book very much as they are both 8 and 10 years old. It gave several facts about Hurricanes and Tornado's. We live in the state of Texas and Tornado's is one thing we have to be prepared for and these few facts and history is very interesting. It gave really good tips on how these storms are formed, what damage it does. If you live in these areas of extreme weather this is a must read for younger children.DISCLOSURE: While I did receive these items for free in consideration of a review, my opinions are still my own.
My 7 year old really enjoyed the pictures and information. We live an area that gets tornadoes in the spring and summer, so this gave her a better understanding of what's going on. She has had an interest since she was 4. I had been following the aftermath of the 2001 tornado in Joplin, MO because a member of one of the message boards I belong to had not been heard from. She watched all the videos with me of the tornado itself and the damage. As she got older, she started to realize how truly dangerous they are and was developing a fear. This book helped to ease her mind a little bit.The only issue I had was that some of the images appeared to be paintings or drawings and not actual storm images.I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my honest review.
There are some spectacular photos in this book and good information about hurricanes, tornadoes and typhoons. My problem with this book is that some of the photos look a little too outrageous like they have been Photoshopped. 2 stars means "I didn't like it."I bought this as educational book for my children. The description said numerous times that this was the target audience. Some of the modified photos ended up scaring my young kids. There is a lot of info on destruction and death by extreme weather so this might not be good for young children. There are some safety tips, so that helps keep my older kids from being as afraid. This book reminds me more of a power point presentation I would see in college with the layout of the print, it wasn't really taught on a child's level in my opinion. I'm uploading a few screenshots from my kindle purchase. On the plus side, the photos looked great on my tablet. Nice colors and resolution. Retail sample tested for evaluation and review purposes.
I was quite thrilled with this book! As a homeschool teacher, I was hoping that my kids could actually learn something from a book like this AND THEY DID! This book helped tremendously when studying different types of weather and the pictures are amazing. The book in written in a way that my 9 and 11 year olds understood it perfectly and could understand the information they were reading. This is a very well-written book and can be used and enjoyed by all ages.I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review. This book is very well presented. The photographs are breathtaking, and demonstrate not only the components of the weather systems discussed, but the extent of the devastation they can cause. The vocabulary is something every junior high school or middle school student should be familiar with (if not, there are a couple of new words to be learned here - a bonus), so this should be good for a range of student levels, including advanced lower grade classes. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating is because having been an editor myself, I noticed a couple of grammatical errors that only an editor would pick up. Bottom line: the book's good enough for my grandson's library, so it gets a solid two thumbs up.. =)I received this item free in exchange for my honest review.
