In 1966, I was eight years old and already in love with books. My family and I were at the Michigan State Fair, and we met an encyclopedia salesman there. He was selling the Worldbook Encyclopedia and something called "Childcraft", We bought and whole set, and even subscribed to their Yearbook series for six years. It changed my life. A young bibliophile and knowledge addict like me found the white, blue and gold volumes fascinating. The Year Book kept me informed on current affairs, and introduced me to the yearly musing on current developments in the arts by someone named Alistair Cooke. I was also fascinated by Red Smith on sports, Paul Henri-Spaak on world affairs, and ( I think) Lawrence Cremin on science.) But what realy took my breath away were the wonderful"Childcraft". They were beautifully illustrated and stunningly informative. I especially loved the last three volumes; "People, to Know", "Scientists and Inventors" annd "Pioeneers and Patriots". They were wonderful stories about great people or events of the past. It was especially facinating how "multicultural" the volumes were - in 1966!. Though I remember almost no Hispanics, there were great African Americans, great American Indians- inded, there were remarkable men-and women- from every phase of American- and world history. Together with the old "Golden History Of the World"( which we bought at the same time), these books educated me far more than my elementary school. Sad ly, the 1966 edition eventually replaced by a slicker, "dumbed down version. I wish it were still in print, or that the folks at Worldbook had taken the time to update it for today's audience. It is desperately needed in this post literate age.
My mother bought these books for me when I was about 5 or 6. I'm 21 now and when I seen the picture of the books it brought back wonderful memories. These books were so great to have when I was young because I wanted to know about everything. The arts and crafts book was my favorite. These books are full everything a young, eager-to-learn child needs to know. They include lots of pictures and information to keep children entertained and even provides fun activities and games to play. It really get's their creativity flowing. I would buy these again for my children. I would definantly recommend this to anyone with children that love to read on their own. 5 stars
We were really excited to get this set. Thinking it was more like an encyclopedia of stories. We quickly realized they are the begginnings of stories, and then say to be continued, if you want to read the rest of each story you have to buy the book it's from! Not very happy. If I'd known that, I'd just have gone to the library.
My father bought the whole set of these books for me, when i was 4 years old and i didnt even know how to read. But i loved these books and the pictures entertained me and let my imagine fly. I used them well until my tween years. My favourite were the plants book. My brother loved the science book. And my sister, the countries book. Sometimes we used the books, all 15 of them as dominoes. Now i'm planning to get it for my children.
I remember a door-to-door salesman coming by our house when I was little and my parents buying the entire set for me. I read all 15 books and had a period where each volume was my favorite. I referenced the animal volumes, weather, and science ones throughout elementary school for my projects and reports. The pictures are lovely and the text is very easy to read. We gave away our set to my little cousins, and sometimes I want to go steal them back. I'd love for my future kids to have books like these.
If you have young children, or plan to, this would be the best investment in their reading education you could make.Sometimes you can find a set at garage sales or used book stores, buy 'em!
My son and I love this set of childcraft very much. It's the best invaluable Christmas present that my son has ever had. He's just 8 yrs old.
the book i got wasnt the book i ordered but it was still ok. if it would have been the one i wanted it is a great book, great stories, i grew up on this childcraft series and they teach you so much, a lot of it out of date for today but its interesting to learn about the past.
