Excellent collection of pieces from renowned authors of the different era. I purchased this book, for my sixteenth century Literature class, and I must admit some of the readings were quite difficult but yet enjoyable -- taking the readers into a completely different world - a world full of surprises. The book also contains introductory material, which can be quite resourceful before delving into the materials themselves. Excellent read, but not one I'm particularly fond of.
This is currently by far the best anthology of 16th and 17th century English literature out there. Perhaps the best improvement since the last edition is the inclusion of the complete text of Sidney's Defence (or Apology for) of Poetry. It is hard to beat a book which contains Twelfth Night, King Lear, book 1 of The Faerie Queene, Utopia, Doctor Faustus, Volpone, the Duchess of Malfi, and all of Paradise Lost, plus Donne, Herbert, and the rest. Really there's a lifetime of interest just in this volume. It usually comes packaged with the Middle Ages and the Restoration and 18th century, but (apart from Seamus Heaney's Beowulf) I hardly look at them. This one I carry around on trips.
I particularly like the introductions to the different periods that put the literature into context. Also a great plus that it's not overwhelmingly about Shakespeare and that it includes many female authors.This is very helpful to get a true feeling for the period.
Used it for Renaissance Lit class. Was a useful book with lots of info and factual things as well as popular plays and such from early modern period culture. Is a pretty thick book with lots of tissue thin pages and little font though.
This book was ordered as part of a bundle of textbooks needed for the Fall 2012 semester. The books arrived within two days due to my  Prime subscription, and were in brand new condition. I am very satisfied with my order and all of the products have been very useful in my classes this semester. I will continue to buy books from  in the future!
I had to buy this for a writing seminar, and ended up falling in love with this type of poetry. But chances are, you have to buy this for a class and don't really care about reviews. But still, I sit here and type your review.
The book itself was quite good, but the book came completely covered in pizza. I don't know who left their lunch in between the pages of my crumpled anthology. However, the many creases and bends in the pages ensured the delivery of nearly a full helping of tomato sauce, pepperoni and cheese.
