For years Norton has been the standard in the Literature textbook field. But lately it seems that Longman is coming up and taking over. First there are the pocket anthologies edited by R.S. Gwynn, better than anything Norton has. Then there is the Longman Anthology of Short Fiction edited by Dana Gioia and R.S. Gwynn, which should take the place of Norton as the standard that all other textbooks should be compared with. And finally there is the series of anthologies edited by X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia. The Introduction to Fiction is an excellent anthology written by one of the best poets of this generation and one of the best poets of the older generation. Kennedy's years of experience in the literary world, and his years of experience writing for children (making things easy to understand), and Gioia's take on literature from outside the world of academia have given this anthology an ease of understanding that you won't find in anything Norton has put together. They write clearly. They have chosen good stories, and ones that help understand the topic of the chapter. As well as a `writer's perspective' which adds understanding to the story. They also have added two new casebooks on Raymond Carver and Flannery O'Connor.I'd say that without any doubt Longman will overtake Norton with this anthology. In fact the only Fiction anthology that I find to be any better than this one is the Gioia & Gwynn Short Fiction anthology, also put out by Longman.
It's a text book, so many of the normal review questions are hard to answer 2 weeks into the class. Whatever the case, this is simply a compilation assembled to illustrate points the authors are trying to make regarding various facets of fiction writing. It's horribly overpriced for such a flimsy paperback. I paid $51 for a ratty used copy, becaused $115 MSRP for a new one is highway robbery. Even "discounted" to just under $90 is ridiculous. Frankly, $51 was too much. This is at best a $35 to $40 book (new) outside the rarified air of academia. If they are going to charge so much perhaps a more durable binding and better paper might be worth considering. Of course they would probably want $200 plus for it then. Yeah, I know, most college books are overpriced, it's the nature of the business. This one seems to have the least value for money of any texts I've purchased so far. $80 for a paperback sucks a bit less if it actually seems like they used quality materials. I would point out that there are good quality hardbound texts for similar money.
I love these books. there are four parts and they are all so interesting for someone who is very into writing, literature, poetry, etc. I strongly recommend them for you, even if your not taking a college class.
I bought this book because it was a school requirement for one of my general Ed classes. The book was okay, but I didn't keep it in my library after the class was over, so that's got to say something.
I love this book. We used it for my Intro to Fiction class, and it has a good mix of short stories. It has a lot of extras for some stories that will help you understand the stories better. I commend my teacher for picking this book and I won't sell this book for book-buy-back. It was also the same thing with last semester no one sold the book so we all had to buy new books.
The price was incredibly low so I was nervous it might be a scam but the book came through in a timely manner. The only downside is it looks a little roughed up around the corners. I don't know if that was from shipping or if it actually was used. Either way, very low price for a book in pretty good condition.
I was required to get this books for class, and it's really not that bad. As textbooks go, it's fabulous, actually. The stories are intersting and the information is helpful. A good buy, and a lot cheaper on then it would be at my university book store. That's the part I like the best.
I was very excited that my book was delivered so quickly but I opened the package and the book was in horrible condition. The description said the book was in good condition. The front cover was completely ripped to pieces and a good amount of pages in the back are messed up. Not very happy with this purchase. I can't return because I need it for my class and I don't have time to get another sent to me.
