Forget everything you think you know (or don't know) about perspective. This book builds an easy-to-follow, ground-up understanding of how to turn a flat painting or drawing surface into a living, breathing, dimensional scene that lures viewers in. No matter how you look at it, it's the ultimate guide to perspective for artists of every medium and skill level.

This book is incredible. I highly recommend it.The writing is detailed, clear and simple. The accompanying photographs, line drawings, sketches and paintings are numerous and clearly show what is being discussed. The discussion is comprehensive but written in a way to make the subject clear without unnecessary clutter. The author starts with "Natural Perspective" including the elements of size, spacing, tone, value, color, overlapping, placement, etc., then moves on to the rules of Linear Perspective.I have a burgeoning collection of art, drawing, sketching and painting books and this ranks at the very top.The discussion of Natural Perpective in the first several chapters is - by itself - worth the cost of the book.I can't recommend this highly enough !!!!!So many books fall far short of their promises. This one delivers.

Illustrates and explains the right way to draw roof angles, shadows and reflections, as well as stairs, tile floors, wheels, etc. Uses many diagrams, photographs, painting examples (watercolor & some oil), and written suggestions for different methods to try in figuring out how to draw something correctly. Briefly touches on focus, reflected light, scale, etc; some step-by-step demonstrations on drawing houses. Some prior perspective knowledge might fill in some small gaps in information (struggled through Rex Vicat Cole's Perspective for Artists, a helpful 1920s textbook-like reprint) but this book goes to great lengths to illustrate perspective in a way I can understand.

I have "Perspective Without Pain" by the same author. The "Art of Perspective" is basically the same book, but he has expanded it with full color illustrations and some new material. The book has helped me understand and create depth in my artwork, and the exercises are fun to do. If trying to choose between the two books, the "Art of Perspective" is the best choice.

I am an art teacher who has spent years teaching perspective, linear and atmospheric...and I have never found a very good book until this one!!!! The Art of Perspective: The Ultimate Guide for Artists in Every Medium

After reviewing multiple books from my local library on perspective (I teach art classes at the college level) and this book is a great starter for understanding perspective. It even goes into a little on use of colors for atmospheric perspective.I generally read reviews of books I'd like to buy on , but this one I found at Barnes and Noble, it was a little more expensive, but I looked through the book at all the examples, right then I knew I had to buy it, but online of course! Once I got it, I couldn't put it down! If you're one of those people like me that ride the fence and can't make up your mind about a purchase, I'm giving you my word on this one that this is a great book to have in your collection. I'd even like to use this for teaching a class, the images are SIMPLE, easily explained, and I don't think anyone would ever have a problem with this book except for the author doesn't have even more art technique books published - I would definitely buy them.....however, I am SO glad I made this purchaseEven if you're unfamiliar with perspective, or a struggling student trying to learn this technique - this book did explain everything better than how I was taught/instructed when first learning perspective. I give this book my fullest recommendation.

Far from the "Ultimate Guide", this book really only covers the absolute basics of one, two, and three point perspective. What it does cover, however, is relatively easy to understand with simple, clear line illustrations (and some washy watercolors). If what you need to know happens to be covered, you're in luck. If not, well, I'm still searching for a comprehensive perspective book which covers the more complex perspective problems I need solutions to in my work. When I find it, I'll be sure to review.

It might be a great book but don't get it for your Kindle. Too hard to see the details in the illustrations. Maybe if you had it on a Kindle app with a big color monitor I would be OK but on the small screen of the Kindle too much of the content is lost.

Although I already know quite a bit about perspective, there was some new information here and there and different ways of explaining it. It was also a good refresher. Excellent for folks who don't know anything about perspective. I found myself flipping past a lot of it. I found the chapters about atmospheric perspective and the use of space, overlap and color etc. helpful. The works of art were helpful as examples.
