The content of the book is great and the translations used for most of the books are adequate. I do not like the translator for Meditations and prefer the Hayes translation. While this does serve as a convenient way to get a good deal of the great stoic writing the format is annoying. Even though the table of contents is active it becomes a hassle to navigate if you are not reading in order as people are wont do when reading Seneca and Epictetus. I would recommend buying a physical copy of the book for Seneca and Epictetus.
A great combination of written works. Sadly it is not like the pictures on this book cover, in that it isn't a sleeve for a number of little books, nope, just one giant paper back book with small writing. But if the writing were any bigger it'd be a much fatter book. So this way its compact and still houses the good works within.
Very pleased. Very interesting, not much to criticize; great to have it in kindle format
The best education available at his time, real-life, everyday challenges of the most dangerous kind. This is REAL " positive self-talk" and a man steadying himself and delving into what is most important to him: read, re-read, learn. Grow.
This 6 pack of stoic thoughts are a priceless treasure that left a deeper impression on me than anything christianity has fabricated for the masses. Common sense abounds thru the entire collection. The conclusion by the compiler of this data could have been left out, but overall truth outshines any interjection of personal opinion.Read this collection and your life will be enhanced!
Great book and layout. I've read through it 4-5 times. The kindle version is great, too, but I bought the hardcover because the Kindle doesn't really make it easy to know who / what you're reading at any given time. Still, have bought two hardcovers, gave one to my daughter after she watched Gladiator.
First off, not only is this collection over-priced, it is horribly formatted and the print is incredibly small. The entire thing is dishonest. It repeatedly represents itself as the "complete collection" of the Stoics which with the two editions might be something resembling the truth but it certainly isn't just for the first. Also the pictures of a old collection of books makes (potentially) someone think that they'd get a book per collection. You can find the writings of all three Stoics incredibly cheap - particularly Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. I recommend buying one by Epictetus or Seneca (the Discourses of Epictetus is what I've read and enjoyed so far - the Golden Sayings is far too aphoristic for my liking) and see if this is for you - rather than blowing more than twenty dollars on something which has far too small print. Clearly this text (despite the wisdom it contains, and the later editions might contain unique or hard too find works by the Cynics or Epicureans - but what's in here you can easily find elsewhere) is praying on the ignorant. Not very virtuous.
Incredible collection for an incredible price. These books by Aurelius and Epictetus offer the reader a glimpse into their minds and is great for any budding philosopher. Combined with a plethora of images and a biography of Marcus Aurelius, this is a must-have collection.
