What an AMAZING road trip between a nephew and his great-uncle.Levi's job is that of a boxboy and a bagger at a grocery store...Not too glamorous...So when his aunt offers him $600 to go pick up her father he jumps at the chance! He is purely in it for the money...That is until he meets Loyal...Along the way lessons will be learned...Hearts will be softened...Life will slow down...Loyal will teach Levi about the beauty of patterns, the strength of slowness, the wonder of pace, and the link between wisdom and time.Levi will, in turn, take Loyal in a fast red car, take him fishing and hiking and give him the road trip of a lifetime. And we get to go along for the ride too!A wonderful, tender book filled with humorous moments...wait until you meet Evelyn and Glen...This is truly a road trip worth remembering!
I bought it, thinking that it was the scriptural Bountiful, but, no, it's actually the Bountiful that I live in. However, the book isn't really ABOUT Bountiful; that's just the destination. It isn't your usual plot but is very thought-provoking, an educational journey, both for the characters in the book and for the reader. Even though that may make it sound a little boring, it really held my interest! It would be a good book for men to read, also (Father's Day is coming up).
I love Don Smurthwaite's storytelling - whether he is talking about teens, seniors or his own peers he has a keen way of using basic life's morals and values we all have experienced in one form or another and presenting them in a thought provoking meaningful way. For me as I read this book I thought throughout "I remember when I felt that way," or "oh, if I were that age again I think I'd try that." In this book you learn about Levi who simply wants to earn money (or so he thinks); you learn about Barbara who simply wants to retrieve her father from the middle of what most people consider to be nowhere (North Dakota) and not have to take time of her own to do it (what a lost opportunity). Intertwined with funny and tender life experiences you will relate no matter what two relationships you care to put together. Have fun this summer on the beach, in the sun or curled up on the sofa plotting your own ideas for your next trip!
This was a wonderful read that inspires and uplifts. It makes a person want to be better, to learn and to be genuine. Thank you, Mr. Smurthwaite, for that marvelous look at the things that are truly important in our journey of life.
This isn't the kind of book I usually like, but something clicked with this one and I liked it a lot. My biggest complaint was the younger man who acted more like seventeen than twenty-four, though I understand why the author made him so immature since it gave him more room to grow and mature. There are some wonderful observations throughout the book.
we read this book in our book club and really enjoyed it. It was a pleasant readIt made us think about the later part of a persons life. Where will we end upand who will help us and care for us.
A warm, person-to-person story, heart warming and helpful to foster introspection and to reinforce values. You will like yourself more, and those around you while reading this book.
