Cobb’s Prepper’s Armed Defense is another good introductory addition to the Cobb library. I stress the word introductory, as this covers many of the basics of self-defense options (e.g. firearms, knives, non-lethal options). If someone is looking to get a good overview of what should be taken into consideration when preparing one’s home or personal defense, you have found a good guide. As Cobb stresses, however, knowledge and training of self-defense options is more important than the list of selections throughout the book. There is a chapter on Projectile Weapons, which mainly includes variants of bows, slingshots and blowguns. Cobb’s review of these items places them in a ‘not-great-solution-for-personal-defense’ category. While there is some reference to the assistance these weapons could provide in hunting for food or being used in contrast to no defense option at all, this chapter could just as well be left out of the book. Similarly, this could be said for the chapter on Martial Arts Weapons, which would require significant training for anyone not steeped in the martial arts.Arguably, the most substantive chapters focus on non-lethal weapons, melee weapons, and force multipliers. These options are easily employed by most people, they are typically the safest options to them as defender, and, perhaps, the most legal options for personal defense. The highlight of the non-lethal weapons section is the distinction on how to appropriately rate pepper spray (CRC measurement). The section on force multipliers speaks to alarm system options that do not require subscriptions from big home protection names and it makes a succinct argument for area denial, among other topics.
I received a copy for review from the publisher in exchange for an honest review of the book. Since I've practiced and taught martial arts and close combat methods for over three decades I felt quite comfortable reviewing this book, as I'm very familiar with much of the weaponry described and their use in both martial arts practice and self-defense. So, on to the review...What this book does well is it lists and explains the wide variety of options available to average everyday citizens for arming themselves prior to and during a SHTF event. If you are someone who is unfamiliar with weaponry, both of the lethal and nonlethal varieties, this book would be a handy addition to your bookshelf. The author does a fine job of explaining various common weapons, their potential applications, and their use to the prepper for self-defense. He goes in-depth when explaining the use and function of various firearms (fiction authors who aren't gun owners, please take note), and provides similarly detailed information on knives as well. In addition, there are useful tidbits of info sprinkled throughout the book on a variety of topics from pepper spray to stun guns to improvised and homemade weapons. My main beef with this book is that it's just an overview, a short encyclopedia of weaponry. There's not really much tactical information included in the book, and the section on home fortification is woefully inadequate. That being said, I don't believe the author intended this book to be a tactical manual or a field guide to perimeter and physical security, so I think it would be unfair to judge this book by that measure. I only mention it so that potential readers will know what they're getting and not be disappointed with their purchase.
This review will be a summation of the good, the not so good, and some things that I hope make the second edition.First off let me say that this is the second book by Jim Cobb I have read. Both are of reasonable length and easy to read. Jim has a writing style that gives just enough information without overwhelming you. I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. Probably could have done it in two.If you are fairly well versed in self defense or have taken a self defense law class at your local range, you are likely not to learn a large amount of information, though there are still things potentially of interest. If you are a shooter but don't know much about archery, then you will learn some basic things about archery. And as we say in the prepping community, there is always more to learn and the more information you have, the better prepared you will be. This book is by no means exhaustive but I think that the right balance has been struck if the book gets you to go look up and read more on the subject. Before I talk about the good and the not so good, I should mention the Title of the book is somewhat misleading. The book is indeed all about Armed Defense. There is very little about a Prepper's defense for after a major crisis. I was expecting to see some more about or references to making things to use after SHTF. I was kind of expecting to see a chapter or longer discussion in each chapter of how to use that topics chapter in a survival event. Don't get me wrong there are mentions of this but they are fewer and further between than I was expecting. The book comes down to being a great review of basic self defense weapons of all types but is geared more to the here and now.The Good: It's easy to read.
