These hundred poems and fragments constitute virtually all of Sappho that survives and effectively bring to life the woman whom the Greeks consider to be their greatest lyric poet. Mary Barnard's translations are lean, incisive, direct—the best ever published. She has rendered the beloved poet's verses, long the bane of translators, more authentically than anyone else in English.

Sappho from the year 600 B.C. is by far one of the most interesting Greek poets I have ever read lately. I know that back in history after her death most of her poems were being burnt because of religion and the way she was sexually. And thankfully some of her work were saved and locked away until they are now published and translated. She is one of the poets that I recommend to readers and/or writers who want to become poets in the future. This is great and interesting knowledge to discover and learn about her work. This is also something that could get us to become inspired. Her work will also help some of the current and future writers to build their writing skills. What I have learned from reading her poems was that I have gained some knowledge about her emotions. Her emotions that were mentioned in her poems, along with the imagery and metaphors, are that I could understand what her life was. I could understand and feel what she have gone through back in time, as if she have just grabbed me inside her world and visualize what was going on. The imagery that was used to describe her situation and emotions are all well done. Some of her poems also relates to what I have felt in the past. So if you are a fan of poetry and/or want to gain your writing skills, then this is the book you should read and enjoy. This book is worth keeping in your collection and to read again.

I gave this book a 5 star because it is in like new condition for a used book. I enjoy the history behind Sappho and being able to have her poems even just the small bits of them put in a language that I can read is fantastic. I can just imagine what the rest of the poems might have been.

Would have loved to meet her.

Perfect! Thank you
