Angie Stone does an excellent job uncovering and educating her readers on a very serious problem facing our elderly. This is a must-read and must-share book with professionals in dentistry, and long term care. This book will save lives and improve the quality of life in the final chapter for your loved ones.
Ms. Stone's insightful commentary has a critically important knowledge base that we all must disseminate to care givers to improve patient care. Pneumonia has been the bane of older adults for generations and now we have one explanation that is preventable. She is also accurate with her observations of nurses, nursing assistants, and their educational programs. Attitudes as well as skills are taught. Professions traditionally dominated by women are still struggling for recognition and respect and sometimes those issues get in the way of excellent patient care. My hope is that the new ideas in this book will be accepted and utilized. This can really make a difference. As the population ages and the baby boomers grow old with their natural teeth, maintenance of good health certainly includes oral hygiene! Let's work together on this.
So timely, I just had a friend hospitalized with Strep Pneumonia he has periodontal disease. He wonders why at the age of 54 he was hospitalized for pneumonia right before Christmas 2014. Could be he had not received professional cleaning for 13 years before he finally made it to my office for Scaling and Root Planing in 2010? Then when I left this office he did not do his continuing care in a timely manner. The last recare was in 2013... if this is happening to our able bodied patients who can care for themselves... what can and will happen to our most vulnerable aging population.Thank you for speaking on preventive measures that in the long run can help our elders, they have contributed to so much, their needs do not need to be ignored!
Hands down the best book out there for those who want to know more about the sad state our geriatric patients are in. I have read it twice and recommended to many. Soon enough we will all be in this situation with ourselves or a loved one. It's time we all step up to make a difference!
Required reading for every caregiver, nurse, physician, decision-maker and frankly, anyone with teeth or who knows someone with teeth. As a professional I am well aware of the constant struggle to achieve and maintain oral health, it begins in the womb. But as elders reach a status of limited self-care, someone must step in to assist in the access of care. The science is astounding related to oral disease, the case studies presented in "Dying from Dirty Teeth" confirm this relationship between oral and whole body health. I would love to see one of these books on each legislators desk as a welcome back to work gift. Well written and to the point, the title says it all.
Angie Stone not only describes a pervasive problem - she offers up an appropriate solution. This is an important book for anyone who cares about the health and quality of life of people in nursing homes. Things can be better - and Angie shows us how. It's not because the nursing home staff doesn't care - it's because they may not know what dental hygienists know. We can help! When oral hygiene is attended to by skilled and knowledgeable care providers, we can catch serious problems early, reduce oral infections, apply preventive strategies, preserve teeth and a pleasing appearance. Beyond that, we know that good overall health and well-being is not possible without good oral health.
This book concentrates on the elder population, however, it concerns all of us. It is a must-read, easy-read, and a must-share book. Angie clearly explains the complex health issues many elders face and the simple solution to this problem. Dying From Dirty Teeth explains how this serious health issue can easily be managed by having the "right" people/professionals (oral care specialists/dental hygienists rather than certified nursing assistants) in the right setting (nursing homes/assisted living/home health care).
A must read and resource for all health care providers. Solid information on what can be done to help those individuals who need are help the most. The problem and solution are spelled out in detail. It's time to move forward! This book is the guiding light.
