This "Essential Iliad" contains about one third of the Iliad. There is a somewhat different abridgment of this same translation in "The Essential Homer," which contains about (I reckon) 44% of the Iliad.What does the extra 11% get you? A much better and more representative distillation of the Iliad, in my opinion. For example, the passages towards the end of the Iliad that show Achilles returned to the battle in all his fury over the death of Patroclus, spitting out famous bitter speeches about life and death, are in "Essential Homer" but not "Essential Iliad."So get the "Essential Homer" instead.
Great version of the epic. I bought it for a law and literature class. I enjoyed the read. The book was smaller than I expected. It was in great condition. It was a very readable version of a much longer epic. The deleted portions of the epic were not necessary for the class I was taking, and they tried to give a short summary of what I was missing out on. This is a great read for a beginner in epics.
Prompt shipping, and the book was brand new! Excellent read, this edition was an easy and very pleasant read! I am a history major enrolled at VCU, and needed this for my Greek History course, it was required and I am so happy it was!
I really enjoy this translation. I think it's perfect for the classroom and is very easy to read. It's clear, and the language isn't so heightened that people are intimidated by it. This is a must for any college student.
This book was what I needed for an English course. I am very much so enjoying the reading thus far. Alot different than what my thoughts on the Trojan war were, thanks to being lead astray by the movie Troy. lol.
I read this book for my Greek and Roman mythology class. Out of the books I have read for this class, this is the best. It is a little hard to follow at times, but not too bad.
A near perfect condensed version. However, some of the more exciting and graphic war scenes are removed, which is unfortunate.
Good read especially for the history buffs out there interested in an inside look of the workings of Ancient Greece.
