This book is one of my all time favorite historical narratives. It compellingly tells the story of Madame Restell, a woman who decided that, despite the fact it was illegal, she was going to provide abortions to New York. It gives a complex, intriguing portrait of her as a person. Nineteenth century New York City and its society really comes to life in the telling.This book has given me more insight into gender and sexuality in 19th century America than anything else I've ever read. If you can get your hands on a copy I guarantee it's worth your time.
