Culturally Alert Counseling: A Comprehensive Introduction
Available To Downloads

The Second Edition of Culturally Alert Counseling is a thorough update to the first comprehensive guide to culturally alert counseling, complete with a companion demonstration DVD. Co-author and editor Garrett J. McAuliffe expands the traditional "definition" of multicultural counseling from the usual two categories of race and ethnicity to seven groupings. The book and companion DVD encourage readers to examine the complex nature of culture and how it impacts all stages of the counseling process.

This book is horrible. It's filled with reverse prejudice and is simply wrong in so many ways. For example this book states that Jews are white European Americans. This issue is a big deal because throughout the book they keep stating how the white European American is so privileged. I see the Jew as one of the most persecuted people groups since the dawn of time. And there is absolutely no mention of the Holocaust and confines the prejudices that Jews have experienced to pre-World War II America. In addition, the text doesn't include a quiz entitled "Do You Have Racial Issues with Jews?" (as they do for Blacks) to help the readership understand their struggles with prejudice against this ethnic group. Why is that? My understanding is that Jews are marked by groups like the Ku Klux Klan just as frequently as other racial minorities. Aside from the issue of persecution, Jews are not European. Jews are from Israel which is smack dab in the middle of the Middle East--since when is that Europe? Israelis are no more European than their neighbors the Egyptians, Iranians, and Syrians.Furthermore, I disagree that white privilege is absolute. I live in a rural community where the white underprivileged are often standing at the whipping post against the affluent white. They are impoverished, living in shacks, mentally ill, drug addicted, unaware of basic hygiene or social graces. In my community, white under privilege is very much alive and well.In researching the idea of white privilege, I found that the term is quite relative and the definition of the term elusive.
