For those of us who are native Spanish speakers and who have adopted English as a second language, verbal communication in English may come as second nature. As perfectly or imperfectly as we may express ourselves, we negotiate our living environment and consider ourselves bilingual. But when we are required to produce high quality written translations in English, we are forced to rely not only in our intuition of both languages but into some guidelines that will assist us into producing translations that not only will withstand the scrutiny of critics but that rely the message accurately. I wish I had had the opportunity of taking the course, but the book 'Thinking Spanish Translation - A course in translation method: Spanish to English' gives solid basis to our intuitions of the language, it gives us reasons to the how and why of choosing one word over another in a translation. The book gives guidelines for scientific and technical translations; legal and financial translations; and translations of consumer-oriented texts, among others. This is not a book to be read lightly or in one sitting, it is to be carefully studied and considered and there are plenty of examples and exercises if one wishes to practice.I am dedicated to translations, this book has allowed me to narrow down basic guidelines that will make my translations more accurate, more readable and more fluid.

Looking forward to a second edition.
I ordered this book to aid me with studing for an interpreting test (for the state of California.) It is a maravelous resource. I can't say enough about this wonderful piece of help.
When I received this book it was highlighted all throughout the book, had water damage, and the first 20 pages of the book had been ripped out and just placed inside the book. I was not to thrilled about working with this book for the semester.
This book is great for theory if you're a non-Spanish speaker wanting to learn about the translation business. But for a speaker, whose first language is Spanish, this book is boring and the exercises, though challenging, focus more on literary translations than technical, which is the core of the translation business. So if you are like me, a native speaker of Spanish, don't expect to learn a lot from this book, except for a few terms in the theory behind translation. For a non-native speaker of Spanish, it'll probably work. As a person who has worked the translation business for the past five years though, I have to say that more than half of the stuff that is in this book is not used by professional translators. I only used this book because my class required it. Overall, I can't wait to sell this book once the semester is over.
This is definitely not a book that one can read just because. Instead, it's a book for someone actually studying the language and who is willing to learn many different technical terms. If you think that you know how to properly translate English to Spanish and viceversa, this book will convince you otherwise showing you of different factors to take into account.
