Whoever it was at Sylvan's who decided that printing the answer key on the same page as the problems should be taken out, stripped, and flogged. The choice you have as the parent/educator is to either a) trust that your kid/student isn't cheating off the answer key that's 2 inches to the right of the question they're working on, or b) go to every other page and rip the key out, which is no small task in a 300+ page workbook.Hey Sylvan, I have no problems with answer keys but please print them in the BACK of the book where they belong. Thanks.
If you are a parent who worries about schools "teaching to the test" than you should supplement your child's learning with a Sylvan education. Besides, what's not to love about a 300-plus page workbook whose tagline is "Activities, exercises, and tips to help catch up, keep up, and get ahead."Because this is 3-books-in-1 (spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension), this workbook looks intimidating. Tear out the pages you want to cover so your child doesn't feel overwhelmed by the enormous content. Although, catchy section titles like "Verbs, Verbing and Verbed," or "I Spy Long "I"" and "A, E, I, O, Uh?" along with "Phooling Around with "F"" and , "It's Not Easy Being "E"" will put your young scholar at ease.I loved working this book with my third grader. The English language, with its silent "e" words, homophones, compound words, palindromes, double entendres and onomatopoeia words should be fun to learn and share. This workbook covers the rules (consonants, vowels, apostrophes and root words) while also bringing the quirky, wacky and devilish side of the English language to life. Enjoy!
This book worked well over the Summer for my daughter who struggles with reading. The only issue (but it is a HUGE one) is the answer keys are shown on the right hand side of the page completely unhidden. What fool thought of this?!! It completely ruins any benefit since, even if children DON'T want to look, they become completely distracted.
This book has great activities, great explanations, and is great to learn. The bad part was having the answer key on the same page as activities. I had to cut them out of the workbook.... Took about 40 minutes. It is hard for the student to think of the answer when it is right in front of them.... It would be better if the answer key was in the back.
We really love this series of workbooks. There are so many different types of worksheets so that kids stay interested and there isn't much repetition.However I can't give 5 stars because, for some reason, they decided to change the format on this one and put the answers in with the worksheets instead of in a separate section in the back of the book as other books in the series are done. So, there are many pages where the answers are on the same page. :(
This is great for summer, when the kids have lots of time on their hands. I date the worksheet (2-3 worksheet pages per day), so the kids know what they have to work on that day (or for the week). Keeps them a little busy with productive work, and not have their minds backslide too much over the summer. Very good balance between this and the math workbook by also Sylvan. Plenty enough worksheet pages for the entire summer. I also encourage the kids with "COUPONS", when they are up-to-date each week with their workbooks (both Reading & Math). They earn meal of their choice coupons, or specialty drink coupons, etc. (whatever helps motivate and encourage them the most).
My son struggled with both language arts and math during his 3rd grade year. I purchased this workbook to help reinforce what he learned so that perhaps 4th grade won't be so hard. We are working with the workbook as well as hooked on phonics and a math workbook I purchased through Abeka. So far I think the practice is helpful this summer. He really gets excited when he gets the answers right. I definitely recommend this material. Some of the work is actually a little too difficult so that keeps him challenged.
Too many examples using 'murder', 'robbery' and 'thieves'. I'm all for my child learning about real life but he won't learn about the grim part of the real world through reading assignments. Those things intimidated him and I ended up not using too many lessons from the reading section for that reason. If I could do over, I wouldn't have purchased this item.
