I was excited to get this book (for a Diversity and Social Justice course in psychology grad school), and I expected a lot from it--perhaps a bit too much. There are a few very harsh reviews of it here, and I must say that although I disagree with the blanket statements made in them (some are especially rude, and obviously ignorant of the purpose of this text), they do make a few interesting points. I will not rehash them here, but I will say that this text is clearly written in, and is best read through from the lens of the American, by the American, for the American. By this, I mean, this text addresses the brief history of various cultures around the world and explores the attempts of immigrants to America to assimilate into American culture, explaining the effect and means by which their cultures are diluted and finally lost when this assimilation ultimately occurs. That is sort of the point of the book, I think, although this is not apparent until read.A major shortfall of this book is the fact that according to this text, Canada does not exist. There is only one brief chapter on French-Canadians, and that really has absolutely nothing to do with Canada. It explores the culture of Franco-Americans (French-Canadians who immigrated to the US three and four generations ago to find work), and their assimilation (see above) into American culture. That's it. Canada is the United States' closest neighbor, sharing a huge border, and apparently it simply does not exist in the eyes of the authors/editors. Utter failure. There are many significant cultures in Canada, and Canadians do indeed have their own uniquer cultural identity.
