This book is a valuable resource for people who wish to translate from German to English or are learning to do so. This edition has been rewritten from earlier editions and it is a great improvement. The explanations are clear and there are lots of examples. Perhaps the only drawback for American readers is that the authors taught in Scotland, so the English is British English. This is not really a problem in the text, but some usages in the translated examples may sound a little strange to American ears, but this is a minor problem, given the excellent presentation and explanations. I highly recommend this book. === nbz

For anyone that is interested in translating texts from German to English, this is an essential. This book will help you understand how complicated and multi-faceted the art of translating is and it is also a good place to start for anyone interested in translation. Great examples from actual published translations and good commentary that follows.

Intelligent, accessible reading giving an insight into how to balance the practice and theory of translation in a truly productive way. Could be found useful by both teachers and students of translation. Makes lessons real fun.

Books on translating from German to English are rare enough that one seizes on them regardless of usefulness. This one is actually useful; the writing is clear and interesting, and contains a wealth of examples and exercises to illustrate the nuances of translating from German. Pretty pricy yet, but any decent university library should have a copy.
