This text introduces student to cultural and minority status issues in psychology, and the role of multicultural issues in mainstream research. It focuses on multiple cultural groups that co-exist in the United States, and the sociopolitical aspects of this co-existence. An emphasis on empirical research findings complements the “real life” relevance of multicultural psychology.

This is not a book on Multicultural Psychology but a book about prejudice and discrimination. The title is a misnomer in that interpersonal relations among different ethnic groups are not addressed. What is addressed is prejudice in a far ranging scope that leaves little to the imagination as to its source. It neglects important topics, such as, how do relations among the ethnic diversities in America affect acculturation processes and strategies or even prejudice. The book presents prejudice as a one way street and makes several general statements, which appear to be the author's opinion, with no empirical support. The author indicates that the world judges people based on European American values as if ethnocentricism wasn't part of every culture. If you want some resources on prejudice and discrimination, you will find many in this book. However, it will require a careful critical reading to determine which of the author's interpretations are consistent with the data.

I am currently reading this book for a Masters class in Psychology and although I am enjoying the content of the book and find it to be quite interesting, I am completely put off by how many errors there are throughout the text! It is kind of unforgivable to publish a book, especially one that is used as a scholarly source, to be filled with so many errors. I will not share detailed examples due to copyright laws but if you take a look at page 47 at the end of the first paragraph the author mistakenly writes "that" when the correct word should have been "than". This was probably the 10th error that I had come across in only 47 pages! I do not understand HOW these errors were not corrected. All in all, I am disappointed in how the book has been put together and feel that it loses credibility when words are incorrect throughout the text.

Oh MY! This book is incredibly dense. It's got so much research to support it, it gets tiring to read. I'm at the fourth chapter and usually two pages in, I can't wait until the chapter ends. I have no real opinion on the content, I think everyone would perceive it differently. I just wish I'd been assigned something else.

I have only began to read this book... as in the first 10 pages (there is a lot in the first ten pages). I am reading this for a psychology class and already have several problems with this book. Although I still hold hope that this book will improve, so far I have found it to be a book based more on opinion then anything else. Also the book itself instead of promoting multiculturalism seems to been doing the opposite by ignoring European Americans. Just because they are white, does not mean that they do not have a culture. This also does not make them completely unable to view other cultures. Many Americans I know are very aware of their cultural history and while they may not practice certain traditions, that does not mean they are not shaped by their family history. It is the same with many other ethnic groups. I hope this book does improve,as I read and it's not just because I want to hear about how awesome white people are. I just want a fair and balanced look at multiculturalism that shows the value of all people and ignoring one group because they've been such a dominate group does not help in that.

This is just what I needed. Great price. Less expensive than my schools bookstore. Product came in time and it was the correct version of the book.

I think in order to truly grasp all that this book is trying to say one must really be able to step outside and inside their own ethnicity and see the whole picture. I am afraid that there are some that have a hard time with that, which is partly due to the very paradigms of the cultures discussed in the book. This book does an excellent job of making that possible, however, for those who want to learn and grow.White privilege is alive and well, and although some (including one reviewer) may see that as racism, it is fact, not. While it is easy to claim that one has been oppressed ... until the time comes when you are truly the minority, I am not sure you will ever understand what the term "racism" really means.Another great book to read is "The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism, and White Privilege," by Robert Jensen.Hall's book does a great job of helping those in the psychology field obtain the much needed cultural information that is often lacking in this area. The scientific basis he uses to address this is also much needed. Also, I think it is about time that minorities have a chance to have self-esteem and present viewpoints without being told that white oppression and white privilege are not alive and well.I guess it is really easy for those who have the privilege to deny it. As a psychologist, the power of denial comes as no surprise to me, in any color.

Great!

I ordered this book as required by my college course. As a college textbook, this book is very poorly written.
