The book begins by tracing the evolution of the field, reviewing influential concepts, models and methodological approaches, then moves on to consider the main areas of research in interpreting, before reviewing major trends and suggesting areas for further research.Featuring chapter summaries, guides to the main points covered and suggestions for further reading, Franz Pöchhacker's practical and user-friendly textbook is the definitive map of this important and growing discipline.

Pochhacker sets a standard for the field of Interpretation with this publication, as it provides our first comprehensive introductory text on interpretation. All serious, academic study must begin here, with this in depth exploration of what has been compiled from academics from around the world. Particular attention must be paid to Pochhacker's statements on communication. If there is something lacking I cannot find it, albeit the profession lacks the maturity itself to have yet developed a so called grand unifying theory that would have been discussed in detail here. Again, to Pochhacker, the praise for having written an eloquent and reflective text that should inspire future academics in interpretation who might produce such a GU Theory for interpretation.

If you are getting into ASL interpreting you are going to want this for reference!

I purchased this book for my class at Rutgers. I am in the MA Translation program and I am taking Interpreting. This book is helping a lot.
